lllllllllll llllll UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
SAMUEL SHERMAN, OF EASTON, MARYLAND.
CARVlNG-DISH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,901, dated June 22, 1897.
Application filed Tune 27, 1896- Serial No. 597,162. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL SHERMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, in the county of Talbot and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carving Dishes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a f ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvementsin carving-dishes, the object of the same being to provide a dish or holder for turkey, chicken, roast beef, and similar articles of food, whereby the same may be securely held in place during the carving operation.
The invention consists of a plate having an upright bar secured at one end thereto, with an extension lying parallel to said base, a vertically-disposed securing-rod mounted for rotation in the outer end of said extension adapted to be moved up or down, having tines upon its lower end and a set-screw for locking said securing-rod in any one of the positions to which it may be adjusted.
The invention also consists in other details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device, showing the same applied for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section at right angles thereto. Fig. 4: is a detail perspective view of the lower end of the securing-rod.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
The dish or plate 1 is of the usual shape and is constructed of metal, which may be nickelplated or not, as desired, or covered with porcelain, so that it presents the appearance of an ordinary china dish. Secured to the top surface of the dish 1 and extending longitudinally thereof are a pair of parallel ledges 2 2, for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. At one end of the dish 1 an opening or socket 3 is formed, into which fits and is secured a bar at, having an overturned upper end 5, which lies parallel to the top surface of the plate. Extending through the outer end thereof is a securing-rod 6, which is capable of rotation and may be adjusted up or down by means of a set-screw 7. Upon the lower end of the securing-rod 6 are two pairs of parallel tines 8 8, which are adapted to be passed through the top surface of the turkey or other article which is to be operated upon.
In using my device the turkey, should this be the article to be carved, is placed upon the dish 1 in the usual manner with the back thereof fitting between the two parallel ledges 2 2. The securing-rod 6 is then forced downwardly, pressing the tines 8 S into the turkey, one on each side of the breast-bone thereof. The set-screw 7 is then tightened and the turkey is held firmly in place. The carving operation may then be performed on one side in the usual manner, and when it is desired to operate upon the other side thereof the setscrew 7 is loosened and the securing-rod 6 is rotated in its bearings, so that the opposite side of the turkeyis brought within easy reach of the carver.
While I have described my invention as being especially adapted for use in carving turkeys, it is also adapted to be used with chickens, ducks, roasts, and similar articles.
In manufacturing the device it is proposed to nickel-plate the bar 4, its extension 5, and all the other metal parts connected therewith.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a carving-dish, of an upright bar secured at one end thereof, having an extension lying parallel to said dish, a vertically-disposed securing-rod mounted for rotation in the outer end of said extension, adapted to be moved up or down and having tines upon its lower end, and a set-screw for locking said securing-rod in any one of the positions to which it may be adjusted, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a carving-dish, having a pair of parallel longitudinally-extending ledges upon its upper surface and an opening or socket at one end thereof, of a bar secured in said socket and having an extension at its upper end which lies parallel with said dish, a vertically-disposed securing-rod mounted for rotation in the outer end of said extension, adapted to be moved l p 01- down specification in the presence of two subscrib' and having tines upon its lower' end and a ing Witnesses. set-screw for locking said securing-rod in any one of the positions to which it may be ad- 5 j usted, substantially as and for the purpose \Vitnesses:
described. NEWTON M. MINNIX,
In testimony whereof I have signed this l WM. M. STOCKBRIDGE;
SAMUEL SHERMAN.
