Beit known thatI, ROBERT S. LAWRENCE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SunShields for Protecting the Face from the Reflected Rays of the Sun, of which I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a partof this specilication.

My present invention has for its object to provide an attachment for umbrellas, parasols, and the like whereby the faces of the users of such articles may be protected from the glare and heat of reflection as well as from the direct rays of the sun.

So far as I am aware my invention presents the first instance of any attempt in which provision has been made whereby -a shield or like device may be so attached to an umbrella or parasol that the face of the user can be effectually screened from the glare and heat, which are most distressing to the eyes and injurious to the complexion.

To this end my invention consists in providing means whereby a shield may be connected to an umbrella, parasol, or the like; and it consists also in the various novel features of construction hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification. i

A designates the stick of the umbrella, to which the shield B is to be attached, preferably by the improved shield-holder next to be described. This shield-holder comprises a clamp C, composed of sections C', forming a divided body, jaws c c', formed at the end of the sections, and a connecting end strip c2, formed integral with the sections CC The clamp C is preferably made of sheet and p spring metal, ard the sections C thereof pass through the cylindrical portion D of the shieldsclip D. The sections C' are bent to fit within the cylindrical part D `to permit a pivotal or angular adjustment of the clip D about said sections. The lshield-clip D is formed from a single sheet of metal bent as shown more clearly in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings, the upper plate of the clip being provided with the opening d3 and the lower plate being provided with a similar opening d4. An adjustingscrew E is provided with a thum bpiece at one end and a screw-thread at the other end, which `engages a similarlythreaded opening in the lower plate d5 of the clip D. Said screw E passes loosely through an opening in the upperV plate d6 and serves to press the sections C together and to contract the cylindrical portion of the clip, thus forcing the sections C together and causing the jaws c and c' to tightly bind upon the stick of the umbrella or parasol. The inner faces of the jaws c c have attached thereto a rubber covering c3 or the like to prevent injury to the umbrella-stick.

It will be observed that the jaws d5 of the clip come together at their outer edges and that these jaws or plates are separated adjacent their inner ends. By this construction a firm bearing of the plates d5 is had upon the shield B, while the openin gs d3 and d4 permit the thick portion or handle of a fan to be readily received without interfering` with the screw binding of the jaws upon the body of the fan. Thus, for example, if one of the ordinary folding fans is used as a shield it can be slipped between the jaws of the clip D, and the hinged end of the fansticks will be received in the openings cl3 and d4' ofy the plates d5 and d6. So, also, if a palm-leaf fan is used as a shield the handle of the f'an can pass freely through the opening d4, while the body of the fan is firmly held by the jaws d5. Preferably the clamp C is made of the Oblong shape shown.

From the construction of parts above described it will be seen that by loosening the screw E the clip may be set at any desired angle and the pressure upon the jaws c c will be relaxed to permit the clamp to be raised or lowered upon the umbrella-stick. 'W ith these two adjustments a practically universal adjustment can be had.

As I have said before, I regard my inven- IOO tion as presenting the irst instance in which an umbrella or parasol or the like has been provided with a shield for the purpose of guarding the face of the user from the reflected rays and heat of the sun, and while I have described What I regard as the preferred embodiment of my invention I do not wish it to be understood as restricted to the details of construction above set out, sin ce these may be varied Within Wide limits as the skilled mechanic may suggest.

It will be understood also that not only is my invention of special value as a means for screening the face from the reflected rays of the sun and from reiiected heat, but it serves also as a most effective means for protecting the eyes and nostrils from dust incident to gusts of Wind or to the dragging of skirts or to the tramping of feet or the like. c

Having thus described the invention, Wha I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. An attachment for umbrellas or the like comprising a clamp adapted to engage the stick of the umbrella and having a part extending at an angle therefrom and forming a support for a shield-clip, of a clip revolubly sustained by said extension of the clamp, said shield-clip having an opening in its side through which the handle of a shield may be passed while the body of the shield is retained between the jaws of the clip, means for adjustably holding said clip in dilerent positions upon the extension of said clamp, said clip being provided with compressible parts adapted to hold the shield in a plane more or less transverse to the plane of the umbrellastick, substantially as set forth.

2. An attachment for umbrellas or the like comprising an open or slotted clamp to engage the stick of the umbrella, a clip embracing said clamp and adapted to support a shield and a screw engaged with said clip to retain both the clamp and clip in engagement with their respective articles, substantially as set forth.

3. An attachment `for umbrellas or the like, comprising a clamp adapted to engage the stick of the umbrella, a clip formed of a single sheet of metal and having a cylindrical portion embracing the clamp and extending into apertured plates for holding a shield, and a screw engaged with the two plates of said clip to retain both clip and clamp in engagement With their respective articles, substantially as described.
