HAND-BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,870, dated June 22, 1897..
Application filed October 2,1896- To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Gnnnnno GIUGLIANO, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of WVest IIoboken, county of I-Iudson,and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand-Bags, of which the following is a specification, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters and figures of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to improvements in hand-bags, the object thereof being to pro vide an article of this character which is con structed in such a manner as to be adaptable for variable uses and which can be folded or adjusted into variable proportions, whereby it can be used either as a small or large bag or folded in a compact form for storage.
The invention will be hereinafter nlly described, and specifically set forth in annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a per spective view of my improved handbag, showing the same formed for use a small bag. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the device rolled or packed for the purpose of storing the same; and Figs. 3 and 4 are perspective views of the bag, showing the same extended or lengthened, whereby a bag of comparatively large size is provided.
In the practice of myinvention I provide, primarily, a frame, preferably of metal, comprising two longitudinal strips A. These said strips have extensions A hinged to their respective outer ends, whereby they may be folded over upon the portions A when it is desired to form a bag of contracted size. Attached to the lower edges of the said metallic framework is a flexible sheet B, which is preferably composed of two thicknesses of material of different quality-for instance, the sheet d being composed of rubber and the sheet Z) of silk, but leather or other suitable material may be used, if desirable, both sides of the sheet 13 being provided with a finish, so that the bag can be reversible.
The central portions A of the frame are provided with ordinary handles a, and as a means for locking the bag any suitable spring pressed fastening devices 0 may be attached Serial No. 607,6 '76. (No model.)
do not confine myself to any for locking the framework toend portions of the bag, which are connected thereto, are folded inwardly and locked to each other, whereby an inner compartment 1 is provided for receiving bundles. The sheet I) is also provided upon the face thereof with pockets or receptacles D and D for the re ception of small articles, the pocket D being supplied with a covering-fiap d. These said pockets are adapted for use both when they are folded inwardly and outwardly.
As a means for finishing the bag when its surface I) is folded inwardly, as illustrated in Fig. 40f the drawings, flaps Eare extended from the vertical edges of the sheet B, which said flaps are supplied with buttonholes e and buttons 6 for engagement with each other. An extended tongue E is also projected from the sheet B and supplied with a buttonhole e for engagement with the lower button e, whereby a finished end is supplied for the bag, as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. When it is desired to use the bag with its surface Z2 folded outwardly with its ends opened for carrying lengthy objects, the flaps E and tongues E are folded inwardly, as illustrated at 2 in Fig. 3 of the drawings.
When storing the bag, it is rolled up, as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and the straps Fare then brought into engagement with the buckles f. These said straps are placed within the bag I), as illustrated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawings, when they are not in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hand-bag, comprising two adjacent longitudinal frames having hinged projections extended therefrom and handles connected thereto, and a folding reversible sheet for forming the bag, said sheet having flaps projected from the edges thereof for forming the ends of the bag, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination of a framework, comprising two central sections having hinged projections thereon, and means for looking In testimony that I claim the foregoing as the said framework together; with a sheet myinventionI have signed myname,in pres- 10 comprising two thicknesses of material and enee of two witnesses, this 1st day of Octohaving pockets formed on one side thereof, ber,1896.
and flaps and tongues upon the end thereof GENNARO GIUGLIANO. provided with buttons andbuttonholes to en- Vitnesses: gage with each other for forming the ends of O. SEDGWICK,
the bag, substantially as shown and described. EMILY SEIDLER.
