EDlVIN VILMONT, OF LAONA, NENV YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONEJ-IALF TO lVlLLlS D. LEET AND HENRY B. lVI'IITE, Ol SAME PLACE.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,443, dated June 15, 1897.
' I v Application filed July 8, 1896. Serial No. 598,422. (No model) Be it known that I, EDWIN WILMONT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Laona, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful ln'iprovements in Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to toys; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class whichconsists of a musical or whistling ball.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, said drawing being a central transverse section of a ball embodying my invention and showing the operating device connected therewith.
In the practice of my invention I provide a semispherical body or ball '5, which is composed of wood or similar material and the flat side of which is provided with a cover 6, of soft flexible rubber or similar material, which is secured thereto by means of an annular groove 7 or in any desired manner, and when the cover 6 is inflated said covelgtogether with the semispherical body portion 5, will assume a round or semispherical form.
Passing through one side of the body portion 5 of the ball is a passage 8, which is closed at the inner end by a flexible valve 9, and the hollow or flexible portion 6 is adapted to be inflated by blowing through the passage 8, and the escape of the air will be prevented by the valve 9.
Passing centrally through the body portion 5 is a tube 10, the inner end of which is provided with a strip 11, of thin rubber or similar material, which is secured in place in any desired manner, and the outer end of the tube 10 is open, and at each side thereof are formed transverse bores or passages 12, the inner ends of which are closed by plugs 13, to which are secured elastic cords 14, and said elastic cords are carried outwardly and connected with a cap or valve 15, through which they pass and to which they are secured, and said cap or valve is adapted to close the outer end of the tube 10 and is also provided centrally with a pin 16, in which is formed an eye or ring to which is secured a cord or string 17.
At the opposite sides of the cap or valve 15 are secured rings or eyes 18, to which is secured the opposite ends of an elastic cord 19, and connected centrally with the cord 19 is another elastic cord 20, and the string or cord 17, which is non-elastic, is secured to the cord 20, as shown at 21.
The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the following statement thereof. The rubber strip 11 at the inner end of the tube 10 serves as a reed around which the air under pressure passes when the cap or valve 15 is removed from the outer end of the tube 10, and this passage of the air under pressure around the elastic strip 11 produces the musical sound or the whistling hereinbefore re ferred to.
In order to operate this device, it is only necessary to secure the free end of the elastic cord 20, which may be of any desired length, to the finger by means of a ring or otherwise, and the ball having been inflated, to cast the ball from the person, and as the cords 19 and 20 are extended the cap or valve 15 will be pulled from its seat by the string or cord 17 and the air will rush out through the tube 10, thus producing the whistling noise hereinbefore referred to. As the ball returns to the thrower the elastic cords 14 serve to reseat the valve, and this operation may be repeated as often as desired and as will be readily understood.
It will be apparent that the ball may be inflated whenever necessary, and it will thus be seen that I provide an attractive toy and one which is simple in construction and operation and well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, while being comparatively inexpensive.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A toy comprising a ball or spherical body which is composed of a portion which is composed of wood, or other solid material, and of an elastic cap or cover which is secured to one side thereof, and which is adapted to be inflated through a valve-controlled passage formed in the solid portion, said solid portion being also provided centrally thereof, with a radial tube the inner end of which is provided with a strip of thin rubber or similar material, and said solid portion being also provided with passages parallel with said tube, the inner ends of which are closed by plugs,to which are secured elastic cords which are carried outwardly through said passages, and which are connected with a cap or valve which is designed to close the outer end of said tube, substantially as shown and de scribed.
2. A toy, comprising a ball or spherical body which is composed of a portion which is composed of wood or other solid material,
and of a flexible cap or cover which is secured to one side thereof, and which is adapted to be inflated through a valve-controlled passage formed in the solid portion, said solid portion being also provided centrally thereof, with a radial tube, the inner end of which is provided with a strip of thin rubber or similar material, and said solid portion being also provided with passages parallel with said tube, the inner ends of which are closed by plugs, to which are secured elastic cords which are carried outwardly through said passages, and which are connected with a cap or valve which is designed to close the outer end of said tube, and a flexible and elastic cord which is secured to the solid portion of the ball at each side of said cap or valve, and which is provided with a non-elastic cord or string, which is secured to said cap or valve, substantially as shown and described.
The hereindescribed toy which coinprises a hemispherical body portion of wood or similar material, to the flat side of which is secured an elastic rubber cover which is adapted to be inflated, said solid portion being provided with a valve-controlled passage through which the inflation thereof, is accomplished, and also with a radial passage there through, said passage being provided with a reed or other sound-producing instrument, and passages formed in said body portion parallel with said tube, the inner ends of which are closed by plugs provided with elastic cords, which are carried outwardly through said passages, and connected with a cap or valve which closes the outer end of said tube, and an elastic cord connected with said solid portion, and provided with a non-elastic cord which is secured to said cap or valve, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention Ihave signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 3d day of July, 1896.
