UNITED STATES PATENT EEicEo JOIIN HOFFMAN, OF NEV ULM, MINNESOTA.
MATTRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 584,178, dated J une 8, 1897.
Application tiled January 26, 1897. Serial No. 620,772. N0 mOCleI-l To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, JOHN HOFFMAN, of New Ulm, in the county of Brown and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvem ent in Mattresses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a mattress which will be hygienic and as soft and pleasant to sleep upon as a feather-bed without the disadvantages of the latter.
A further object of the invention is to provide a mattress adapted to be iniiated by air or other fluid, the mattress being exceedingly simple, durable, and economic in its construction, and furthermore to provide a covering for a mattress thus constructed which may be removed and cleaned without difficulty, and whereby the entire construction of the mattress will be such as to preclude the harboring of insects. v
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of a mattress constructed in accordance with my invention, a portion of the bottom of the casing or ticking being broken away; and Fig. 2 is an end viewof the improved mattress, a portion ot' the frame and iniated sack being in section and a portion of the covering or ticking being broken away.
A frame A is constructed usually of a nonyielding material. This frame is given a shape which will enable it to iit the bedstead, lounge, or other article to which it is to be applied. As illustrated, the frame is of rectangular shape, comprising two end pieces 10 and two side pieces 11.. At the bottom of the frame a webbing is located, sundry of the strips 12 of webbing extending transversely of the frame, while one or more of the strips extend longitudinally of said frame. A sack 14 is located within the frame A, resting upon the webbing at the bottom. The sack 14 is preferably made of rubber or a yielding material, and is entirely closed, except an opening in its side, through which a nozzle 15 is projected from the outside of the frame for the purpose of inflating the sack. This nozzle may be of any construction suitable to the purpose. The sack is of greater dimensions than the dimensions of the frame A, so that when the sack is inflated it will fit close to the frame, as shown in both Figs. l and 2. A covering or a ticking 16 is placed over the frame and the sack. This covering` or ticking is usually open at one end, and the open end may be closed by lacin gs 16 or any equivalent fastening device.
It is obvious that a mattress constructed as herein set forth will be exceedingly cool in summer, and that during the colder season by placing a blanket over the mattress it will ,be as warm and as comfortable to sleep upon as a feather-bed- Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A mattress, comprising a frame, an in tlatable sack of greater dimensions than the frame, whereby when the sack is inflated it will it close to the frame, and a support in the bottom of the frame for the sack, substantially as described.
2. A mattress, comprising a frame open at top and bottom and having webbing secured to its bottom, an inflatable sack fitting tightly in the frame when inflated, and a cover inclosing the frame and sack, substantially as described.
3. A mattress consisting of a frame adapted t0 fit a bedstead or other article, an inflatable sack fitting within the frame, being supported at the bottom thereof, a cover inclosing the sack and the frame, and having an opening, and fastening devices at the said opening, the fastening devices being so constructed that the covering may be removed when necessary, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. A mattress consisting of a frame open at the top and at the bottom and adapted to fit a bedstead or other article, a webbing secured longitudinally and transversely at the bottom of the frame, an inflatable sack ttng Within the frame an d resting upon the said webbing, a tube through Whichjthe sack is inflated eX- tendng from the' outside of the frame into the sack, and a covering inolosing the sack and frame,re1novable therefrom the inttingtube extending through the said Covering as well as the frame, as and for the purpose set forth.
