UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
GEORGE V. BARRETT AND WILLIAM A. BARRETT, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COMBINED FOLDING CLOTHES-BASKET AND IRONING-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters lEatent No. 583,874, dated June 1, 1897. 7 Application filed June 20, 1896. Serial No. 596,350. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE WV; BARRETT and WlLLIAM A. BARRETT, of the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Folding Clothes-Basket and Ironing- Table, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
Our invention relates to a combined folding clothes-basket and ironing-table; and it consists inthe novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective of our improved folding clothes-basket unfolded and ready for use, the ironing table being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View approximately on the indicated line 2 2 of Fig. 1, the. ironing-table being shown in position for use in full lines. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the basket in its folded position and also showing the position of the ironing-table when the same is out of use.
In the construction of our improved folding clothes-basket and ironing-table we make use of the front end piece 5, to which is pivoted the rear end piece 6, forming an X- At the opposite end of the device is the front end piece 7 and the rear end piece 8,pivoted together, forming an X-shaped frame in every way similar to the one first mentioned. The lower ends of the pieces 5, 6, 7, and 8 constitute the feet upon which the device rests, and the upper ends of the pieces 6 and 8 are somewhat longer than the upper ends of the pieces 5 and 7, and said upper ends of the pieces 6 and 8 are connected by the longitudinally-extending clothes-bar 9.
Between the X -shaped end frames and above the pivot thereof is a V- shaped basket 10, formed by the rear parallel bars 11 and 12, connecting the end pieces 6 and S, and the front parallel bars 13 and 14, connecting the end pieces 5 and 7, both sets of parallel bars being arranged in the same manner. Connecting the pieces 6 and 8 and between the parallelbars 11 and 12 are braces 15 and 16, which cross each other at their centers, and between the parallel bars 13 and 14 are similar braces 17 and 1 8. A piece of suitable canvas or cloth 19 is attached to the upper edges of the parallel bars 11 and 13 and allowed to sag down between said bars, as shown in Fig. 2. The ends of the V-shaped basket thus formed are closed by the cords or ropes 20 and 21.
The cord 20 is attached to the outside surface of the front end piece 5'at a point adjacent the end of the bar 14 and then is extended in ahorizontal plane to and is attached to the end piece 6, thence upward a short distance along said end piece, where it is. again attached to said end piece, thence in a horizontal plane back to the end piece 5, thence upwardly a short distance on said end piece 5, thence in a horizontal plane back again to the end piece 6, and so on until the end of the basket is of the desired height. The cord or rope 21 is applied in the same manner as the rope 20.
The cross-bars 22 and 23 connect the upper ends of the front end pieces 5 and 7 with points in the same horizontal plane upon the end pieces 6 and 8. The cross-piece 22 is connected to the rear piece 6 by the hinge 24, and
directly below said hinge 24 is a notch 25, de-
piece, and at the center of said cross-piece is a hinge 30, and the front end of said crosspiece is connected to the upper end of the end piece 7 by means of the pin 31, thus allowing the basket thus formed to fold up, as shown in Fig. 3, the hinges 26 and30 bending downwardly and the hinges 24 and 28 bending upwardly.
The ironing-board 32 (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1) rests upon the cross-pieces 22 and 23 when the basket is unfolded and the table is in position for use. A pair of hooks 33 and 34 are inserted in the rear side of the end piece 6 with their hooked ends turned toward each other, and a similar hook 36 is inserted in the end piece 8 in line with the hook 34.
WVhen it is desired to fold the basket up,
the ironing-board 32 is removed from its position upon the cross-pieces 22 and 23 and placed behind the basket and between the hooks 33 and 34: at one end and rests upon the hook 36 at the other end, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and full lines in Fig. 3.
Our improved combined folding clothesbasket and ironing-table is cheap and inexpensive in construction and very efficient in operation.
We claim In a folding clothes-basket and ironing-table, the combination of the end pieces 5 and- 6 and the end pieces 7 and 8, respectively, pivoted together and forming X shaped frames, the clothes-bar 9 connecting the upper end of the end pieces 6 and 8, the bars 11 and 12 connecting the end pieces 6 and 8 above the pivots, the bars 13 and 14 connecting the end pieces 5 and 7, the braces 15 and 16 between the bars 11 and 12, the braces 17 and 18 between the bars 13 and 14, the canvas 19 connecting the bars 11 and 13 and forming a basket, the ropes 20 and 21 forming the ends of said basket, the cross-piece 22, having the hinge 26 in its center, connected to the end piece 6 by the hinge 24, resting in the notch and pivotally attached to the upper end of the piece 5 by means of the pin 27, the crosspiece 23, having the hinge 30 at its center, connected to the end piece 8 by the hinge 28, resting in the notch 29, and pivotally attached to the upper end of the piece 7 by means of the pin 31, the ironing-board 32 resting upon the cross-pieces 22 and 23, the hooks 33 and 34: inserted in the rear side of the end piece 0 and the hook 36 inserted in the rear side of the end piece 8, saidhooks forming asupport for said ironing-board when it is not in use, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
