UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
lVlLl-IELM SIEVERT, OF NEW YORK,'N. Y., ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PHILIP RIEGELBECK, OF SAME PLACE.
TRAVELING-BASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,774, dated June 1, 1897.
Application fil d January 6, 1897. Serial No. 618,109. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILHELM SIEVERT, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, at present residing in New York city, in the county and State of New York,have invented a new and Improved Traveling-Basket, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description;
The invention relates to trunks made of strips of willow, ratan, or the like; and its object is to provide a new and improved basket designed for the use of travelers and other persons and arranged to maintain at all times the shape of the basket and to prevent the cover from spreading when pressed on, so as 'to avoid crushing in the cover over the basket- 'as heretofore constructed.
The invention consists principallyof a basket-cover having in its lower edge a stifieningframe bound in place by the basket material.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a front elevation of the improvement with parts broken out. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan View of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional side elevation of one end of the cover of the basket.
The improved traveling-basket is provided with a body A, formed of strips of willow,-
ratan, or like material in the usual manner, and on the said body is hinged a cover B, formed of strips of willow, ratan, or other material, and having its lower end fitting over the upper end of the body A and adapted to rest with its lower edge on the top of a rim A, so as to prevent the cover from passing too far upon the body when in a closed position.
In the lower end of the cover B is arranged a stiffening-frame B, made of wood, iron, or other material, and bound in by the material B of which the cover B is formed, as plainly indicated in the drawings, so that the said frame is not visible on the outside or inside of the cover, but still gives considerable strength to the cover, so as to prevent the sides and ends thereof from spreading and being crushed over the body A when pressure is applied to the top of the cover. The cover is preferably formed transversely in arch shape, and each end is providedwith one or more additional transversely-extending stiffening-bars 13 made of Wood or like material, arranged directly over the ends of the frame B, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3. The bars. B are bound in by the material B of which the cover is made, and the said bars are provided with openings for the reception of the It is evident that when a traveling-basket -is filled with dresses and other garments or materials and such basket while in transportation is subjected to pressureon the top of the cover said basketis crushed in, as above described, and great damage is the usual result to the contents of the basket.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A basket, having a body portion with a broad rim running around the top edge thereof, a cover for the body portion, the cover having downwardly-extending edges, and the cover being formed of bars with material interwoven therewith the bars having their ends projected downward perpendicularly to the cover, a transverse cleat running around the lower edge of the cover and having openings in which the ends of the bars are respectively fitted, a second transverse cleat located beneath the first transverse cleat and forming the lower extremity of the cover edge, and material woven in with said cleats and lashing the same to the bars of the cover, substantially as described.
2. A basket, having a body with a rim running around its top edge, and. a cover for the basket, the cover being formed of bars with material Woven in therewith, the extremities of the bars being bent downward perpendicularly to the cover, acleat running around the lower edge of the cover and having openings respectively receiving the ends of the bars, and material woven in with the cleat and cover and lashing the cleat in place, substanzo tially as described.
3. A basket-cover formed of bars with ma- VVILHELM SIEVER'P.
