O. V. BURCH.
PARCEL CARRIER.
No. 583,731. Patented June 1,1897.
T"! NORNS PETERS cu. mtmwumoq WASHINGTON. n. c.
UNITED STATES OLARANOE V. BURCH, OF TERRE HAU TE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO PETER N. STAFF, OF SAME PLACE.
PARCEL-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 583,731, dated June 1, 1897.
Application filed May 16, 1896.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLARANOE V. BURCH,
a citizen of the United States, residing. at
Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Parcel-Carriers and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to parcel or bundle carriers for use in connection with bicycles; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully de- I 5 scribed and claimed.
In thedrawings, Figure l is a plan view of the parcel-carrier. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the bottom portion of the carrier. Fig. 4 is a partial rear view of the carrier. Fig. 5 is a sectional plan view, showing the notched locking-collars in detail. Fig. 6 is a detail partial plan 'view, showing a modification of the bottom part of the carrier.
The bottom A of the carrier is provided with a bar A in front, which has its ends bent rearwardly at a right angle, forming end bars a.
B are horizontal eyes at the front of the bar, and b are vertical eyes at the rear ends of the end portions a. The eyes are formed by bending around the wire of which the bar is formed. The eyes B may be bent inward of the bars A and a, as shown in Fig. 3, or they may be bent outward, as shown in Fig. 6.
O is a forwardly-curved rear bar having its ends pivoted in the eyes I) and provided with vertical bars 0, bent upwardly from its ends at a right angle beyond the eyes I). Hooks c are formed at the upper extremities of the bars C for engaging with the'handlebar of a bicycle, and c are eyes formed in the bars 0 under the hooks c.
The hooks c are covered with tubes D of soft material, such as india-rubber, so that they will not rattle and will not scratch the handlebar. 1
E are two diagonal braces, each formed of two bars'e, pivoted together at their adjacent ends. The other ends are pivoted, respectively, to the eyes 0 and B.
The bars A a, the bars 0 O, and the braces Serial No. 591,868. (No model.)
E constitute the main framework of the carner.
,E are the bottom stiffener-bars, secured to the middle part of the front bar A and pivoted to the bar 0.
D is a longitudinal stiffener-bar, secured to the endbars a, and (Z are intermediate small bars or wires which prevent small ob jects from falling through the bottom of the carrier.
The front F of the carrierconsists of a frame formed of horizontal bars f and vertical bars f, and has wirework attached to the said bars similar to the bottom. The vertical bars f have vertical eyes 9 at their lower ends, which are pivoted to the eyes 13 of the bottom.
H are the ends of the carrier. Each end consists of a frame of bars and wires, and the front part of each frame is provided with horizontal eyes it, which are pivoted on the vertical end bars f of the front.
H are tension-springs provided with eyes h at their ends and pressing against the upper eyes h and the lower horizontal barf of the front. These springs prevent the ends from rattling and prevent them from swinging about freely, so that they stay in whatever position they are placed unless sufficient force is exerted with the intention of moving them.
Each vertical bart'of' the ends H is provided with a collar I, having at notch'i at its rear. Each vertical bar 0 in a similar manner is provided with a collarj, having a notch j in front. The notches j engage with the bars 1', and the notches 2" engage with the bars 0 when the carrier is extended, the said bars having sufficient elasticity to permit them to be sprung into the said notches.
J are springs having their upper ends secured to the bars 0. These springs have jaws J at their lower ends, which engage with the bars 0 and i and prevent the ends H from rattling and becoming unfastened.
The back of the carrier is formed of two frames K, consisting of bars and wires similar to the other parts of the carrier. These frames K are secured to the bars 0 and G, and they are provided with horizontal bars 70, arranged in line with each other. Tubes m are slidably mounted on the bars and carry opposed clamping-jaws m. Set-screws n are provided for securing the tubes after the clamps have been pressed against the head of the bicycle. The clamps are covered with tubes n of india-rubber to prevent them from scratching the bicycle.
M is a curved distance-piece secured to the bar 0 and provided with an india-rubber tube 0 for bearing against the front part of the head of the bicycle.
The curvature of the bar C is made to suit the bicycle, and when hooked onto the handle-bar and clamped to the head the expanded carrier forms a trough-shaped receptacle in which parcels or other articles can be carried.
When the carrier is not wanted in use, the ends are folded inward upon the front. The front, together with the ends, is then folded downward upon the bottom, the joints in the diagonal braces permitting this to be accomplished. The back is then folded over the front and bottom, so that the carrier can be packed into a small space.
What I claim is- 1. Ina parcel-carrier, the combination, with a front bar A having end bars a projecting rearwardly from it, of a rear bar 0 pivoted to the rear ends of the bars a and provided with upwardly-projecting bars 0 at its ends, and jointed diagonal braces pivoted to the said bars A and O, substantially as set forth.-
2. In a parcel-carrier, the combination, with a foldable trough-shaped receptacle comprising a bottom, two ends, and a back, all pivotally connected together; of jointed diagonal braces arranged outside the said ends and pivoted to the upper parts of the back and to the lower parts of the front, substantially as set forth.
In aparcel-carrier, the con1bination,with a bottom provided with horizontal eyes B at its ends in front, and vertical eyes I) at its ends at the rear; of the bar 0 pivoted in the eyes I) and having end bars 0 provided with eyes 0, a back secured to the bars C and C, a front pivoted to the eyes B, ends folding inwardly and pivoted to the front, and jointed diagonal braces pivoted to the eyes 0 and B, substantially as set forth.
4. In a parcel-carrier, the combination, with a trough-shaped receptacle having its back formed of, two frames having bars 70 arranged in line with each other, of slidable tubes mounted on the said bars and provided with fastening devices, and opposed clamping-jaws carried by the said tubes and adapted to engage with the head of a bicycle, substantially as set forth.
5. In a parcel-carrier, the combination, with a front portion formed of vertical and horizontal rods, of end portions provided with eyes pivoted on the said vertical rods of the front portion, and tension-sprin gs II provided with eyes h engaging with the said vertical rods and preventing the end portion from moving too freely, substantially as set forth.
6. In a parcel-carrier, the combination, with the pivoted end portions having vertical bars 2' provided with notched collars I, of the back provided with vertical bars 0' having notchcd collars j, and springs secured to the bars 0 and provided with jaws coupling the said bars i and C when engaging with the notches in the said collars, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CLARANCE V. BURCH.
