LUGGAGE-CARRIER FOR BICYGLES.

Be it known that I, HENRY CREDLEBAUGH, residing at N ew Carl isle, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Luggage-Carriers for Bicycles, of which the following a speci lication.

My invention relates to luggage-carriers for bicycles, and has for its object to provide a carrier which may be quickly attached or detached to the head of the bicycle, and which, when detached, will form. a convenienthandcarrier; and it consists in forming the carrier out of a stout spring-ire body, which may be sprung in place upon the head and handlebars at its rear end and suitably braced and supported at its forward end by a depending portion supported upon the brake-spoon or the lower portion of the head; and it further consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l. is a perspective view of the improvement, showing the same applied to the head of a vertical-fork" bicycle. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the improvement, showing the same in use as a hand-carrier. lfig. 3 is a plan view of the carrier, and Fig. l shows the carrier as applied to a Star-bicycle head.

In the accinnpanying drawings, A indicates the main or body portion of the carrier, and]; the swinging bracket or handle portion, which are constructed out of stout spring-wire.

The body portion A consists of the side arms,a a, and the cross-bar a, said arms and cross-bar being formed of a single piece of wire, as shown. The outer ends of the arms a are formed with eyes a in which is supported the cross-bar I) of the ln'acket portion 13, which is also formed of a single piece of wire, and which is composed of the cross-bar 1), above referred to, and the side arms Z) I), the outer ends, 7) IF, of which are turned in toward each other and support the handleblock t. To arrange for the ready attaching or detaching of the carrier to the bicyclehead, and avoid the use of securingstraps, I l'orm the cross-bar a with downwardly and inwardly bent lugs l 1, arranged at the ends thereof, and with an inwardly-bent loop, 2, formed centrally of said bar.

In applying the carrier to the bicycle the lugs 1 are placed over the handle-bars E, (see Fig. 1,) and the central loop, 2, is sprung over the securing-nut F, arranged at the upper end of the head G. The depending portion or ln'ackct 15 is then bent down, and the handle-biocl: is turned so as to permit the notch r: to be received upon the [lat arm ll of the brake-spoon, the notch in the handle-block preventing the carrier from having any lat-- eral movement, and therebyholding the same in a steady condition.

While I have shown and described my carrier as in use upon the vertical fork and the star machines, it is manifest that the construction of the carrier may be so modified as to adapt the same to various makes of bicy cles without departing from the broad principle of my invention.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A luggage-carrier for bicyles, consisting of a body portion, A, formed of-spring-wire having one end constructed to fit upon and clamp the head or the handle-bars ol the bicycle, and its opposite end provided with a depending portion adapted to be supported at its lower end upon the bicycle-head, sub stantially as and for the purposes specified.

2. A luggage-carrier for bicycles, consistin g of a body portion, A, one end thereof constructed to fit upon and clamp the head or the handle-bars of the bicycle, and a depending portion or bracket, B, hinged at one end to the body portion, itslopposite end adapted to be supported upon the bicycle-head when in place, said portion B forming a handle portion when the carrier is detached from the bicycle, substantially as shown and described.

In a luggage-carrier, the combination, with the body portion A, formed of springwire, having one end, a, constructed to fit upon and clamp the head and handle-bars of the bicycle, oi? the bracket portion B, formed of spring-wire, its upper portion, 1), hinged in the outer ends of the arms a (1-, its arms 17 Z) extended inward, forming supports for a handle-bl0ck,'C, said block provided with a notch, c, substantially as and for the purposes described.

4. A luggage-carrier formed of spring-wire, consisting of the body portion A, said body portion formed of side arms, a, and cross-bar a, said cross-bar bent to form downwardly depending lugs 1 and an inwardly-bent portion, 2, whereby said cross-bar may be clamped upon the head and handle-bars of the machine, and a swinging bracket portion, 13, hinged in the outer end of the arms, said portion provided with extended arms I) b, and a handle-block, 0, supported between said arms, substantially as and for the purpose described.

5. As a new article of manufacture, a luggage-carrier for bicycles, formed of springwire, consisting of a body portion, A, having side arms, a, and a cross-bar, a, said crossbar provided with clamping-lugs 1 1 and 2, whereby said cross-bar may be clamped to the head an d handle-bars of a bicycle, the forward ends of the arms a being provided with eyes a, a swinging portion, B, consisting" of the cross-bar b, hinged in said eyes, said bar I) bent to form arms I) b, said arms bent toward each other, as at 19 said bent portions b supporting a handleblock, C, said handleblock having a transverse notch, substantially as and for the purpose described.
