UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM C. HOMAN, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE EDXVARD MILLER & COMPANY, OF CONNECTICUT.
LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,534, dated June 1, 1897. Application filed January 27,1897. Serial No- 620,858. (No model.)
lamps, and particularly to that class of lamps in which the body of the lamp performs the function of a chimney.
The object of my invention is to provide in a lamp a simple and inexpensive means for protecting lenses or highly-polished reflector-surfaces with which the body of the lamp may be provided, the said protecting means preventing smoking of the parts, and being readily detachable for the purposes of cleaning or replacement in case of breakage, and also for the purpose of affording accessibility to all the parts of the lamp.
My invention is illustrated by the accom panying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of 'a portion of the body of a lamp and illustrating myinvention. Fig. 2 is a sectional View of the parts shown in Fig. 1, said section being taken on the line 2 2, Fig. 1.
, Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In the drawings accompanying this application I have illustrated only the intermediate portion of the body of a lamp, the upper and lower portions of the lamp illustrated being removable.
A is the body of a lamp. B is a lens in the side of the said lamp, the said lens in the lamp illustrated being carried by a front reflector I), having by preference diverging sides, as shown. This front reflector D is by preference hinged, as at E, to one edge of a suitable opening in the body of the lamp.
F is afastening means, in this case a spring latch, carried by one of the parts A D and detachably engaging the other part. By the means described the front portion of the lamp may be readily opened and closed.
G is a back reflector. This reflector G is by preference detachably engaged with the interior of the body of the lamp. H is a shield for said back reflector. This shield H is detachably connected to the body of the lamp in the manner hereinafter described.
I is a shield detachably connected to the body of the lamp and adapted to protect the front reflector and lens from the smoke or flame from the Wick. In this connection it should be stated that the flame is located substantially midway between the shields H I. The central portion of these shields is made of glass or other suitable transparent material, the same being suitably held in a surrounding or partially-surrounding frame, as shown.
J J are two inwardly-projecting shoulders from the body of the lamp A, the said reflector G being detachably held in position thereby, the opposite edges of the said reflector being held in the angles formed by the said shoulders J J and the adjacent inner surface of the lamp-body A.
The protecting-shields H I are detachably held in position by substantially correspon ding means, K K being the shoulders adapted to engage the shield H, while the shoulders L L retain the shield I. The glass or transparent portion of the shields H I may be of any desired shape or thickness.
By the means described it is manifest that every portion'of the lamp is readily accessible.
In carrying out my invention certain changes may be desirable, and I therefore do not limit myself to the specific form and arrangement of the parts herein shown and described, but hold myself at liberty to make such alterations and changes as are justly within the spirit and scope of my invention.
In a lamp, a body portion, a rear reflector and a front reflector supported by the body of the lamp, a rear protecting-shield having a transparent central portion, a front protecting-shield having a transparent central portion, internal shoulders on opposite sides of the lamp-body for detachably holding said protecting-shields.
