. :FACE-SHIELD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1916.
Application ined october 2e, 1915. semi No. 57,479.
Be it known that I, EDGAli L. WORK, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Face-Shields, of which the-following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in face shields and has particular application to a device of the class described for use by electric Welders and others having analogous occupations.
In carrying out the present invention itis my purpose to provide a device of the class described whereby the face and eyes of Welders may be protected against iiame, sparks, and metal fragments.
\ It is also my purpose to provide a device of the type set forth wherein the transparent plates employed to protect the eyes may be changed quickly and conveniently and any number of plates of various colors associated together to minimize the effect of the light on the eyes.
Another object of the invention is the y provision of a face shield and eye protector which may be supported upon the head of the wearer, which will be strong, compact and light inconstruction, and which may be worn with ealse and convenience and without hindering the movements of the Welder.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction,
combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a face shield and protector constructed in accordance with my present invention. Fig. 2 1s a view.
tional view through the plate carrier and associated parts. Fig. 7 is a perspective view showing a detail of the invention. Fig.
is a fragmentary horizontal sectional view showing another detail of the invention. Fig. 8a is a broken perspective vvlew of the plate carrier. Fig. 9 is a horizontal sectional view through the plate carrier. Fig. 10 is a cross sectional view therethrough. Fig. 11 is a perspective view A showing a modified form of plate carrier.
Referring now to the drawings in detail 1 designates a shield constructed of asbestos or any other suitable material and semiv circular in outline to inclose the face of the wearer. Secured to the lower edge of the shield 1 and depending therefrom is an f apron 2 designed to cover the chest ofthe .wearer and operating with the shield 1 to vsurface of the shield 1 adjacent to one end thereof is one end of a metal strip 5 while fastened to the inner surface of the shield ad]acent to the other end thereof is one end -of a metal strip 6. The remalning ends of these strips 5 and 6 overlap each other and formed on the overlapping end of the strip '5 is a collar 7 surrounding the strip 6 while secured to the overlapping end of the strip 6' is a headed pin 8 capable of interchangeable engagement with keyhole slots 9 formed in the adjacent portion of the strip 5 and spaced apart along such strip.
l0 designates a supporting band having one end secured to the inner surface of the shield 1 adjacent to the upper edge thereof l,at a ,po-int approximately centrally of the length of the shield and secured to the supporting band 10 adjacent to the remaining end thereof is a strap 11 having the central portion spaced apart from the supporting band and passed through the pace between the strap and the supporting band are the overlapping portions of the strips 5 and 6.
Formed in the shield 1 approximately centrally thereof'is a sight opening 12 and secured to the inner surface of the shield contiguous to the lower wall of therside opening is a plate 13 having the inner edge formed centrally with a depreion 14 to accommodate' the nose of the wearer, and curved at opposite sides of the depression as at 15 to conform to the curvature ofthe Qq l face at the sides of the nose secured to the jacent tothe'flower edge o inner surface of the shield adjacent tothe respective end of the opening 12 and proin 12 and this head piece is designed to Var against the forehead of the wearer,
while dis osed below the si ht opening ad-` P fg the shield is a s:v 18 a11dl-.thel head piece andchin nids, fehin famil the forehead ofthe wearer. f' Secured `to theouter surfaeejv ofthe shieldv 1 ref`preferably vcovered with. suitable spectively designed to-bear against and'projectingdown'wardly therefrom is a short hood 19 surrounding the sight opening 12and correspondingto the shape of such opening -an'd secured within the hood 19 at thefinner end thereof is a frame 2O havin Vthego'uter'edge of the to and bottom an i.y end bars formed wit communicating grooves .within .whichare disposed padding strips",t 2l. TThe' lower wall of the hood 19 'is formed ,with cutout portions 22 spaced apartfad depending from the lower bar of .'Ingfaxally with each other.
the. 20 are lugs -23 Vprojecting through lugsf23 are equipped with pivot pins 24l alin- 2.52d,e'signates a holder comprising top and l communicatin `grooves 28.
bars 26--26 and an end bar 27 interconnecting the top and bottom bars at one elidfcfthe holder and the inner edge of the respeetive bars 26 and 27 are formed with At the open end of the ho der the top and bottom bars are connected together by meansof strips 29 spaced apart in parallel/ism and each having the extremities thereof formed integral with the top and bottom bars at one side ofthe holder. Formed on the bottom bar of the holder 25 are lugs 30 corresponding to the lugs 23 and pivoted upon the pins 24 respectively. This holder 25 is capable of swinging movement into and out of the 'hood 19. In order to hold the holder in actuated' position any suitable means may be employed. In the present instance a retractile spring 31 has one end secured to the outer surface of the shield adjacent to the bottom wall of the hood and theremaining end fastened to a pin 32 carried by the end bar 27 of the holder and as the holder is swung from one position to the other, the spring 31 passes the axes of the pivot ends and exerts its influence to hold the holder 25 against accidental movement.
33'designates a plate carrier which, in the present instance is identical in construction to the holder 25 and is adapted to slide into and out of the holder by way of the open end thereof and disposed within the carrier 33 are transparent plates 34 differrespective cut 'out portions 22. These plate carrier, when the-latter is inserted in' the holder to revent the accidentalwithdrawal of the platevcarrier from the holder.
In the present instance a transparent plate 37 preferably amber colored is disposedV within the sight opening 12 and the. marginal edges thereof rest a ainst the rear edge of the bars forming the rame-20, while engaging the inner surface of the plate -37 at the opposite ends thereof are sprmg ngers 38 secured to the upper surface of the plate 13 at the ends thereof, the fingers 38 acting to hold the plate 37 in sight opening.
Spanning the plates between the flaps 16 and resting upon the upper edges of the latter adjacent to the inner surface of the shield 1 is a strip 39 having the ends thereof projecting beyond the flap and turned down as at 40. This strip 39 is arranged below proper position in the' the head piece 17 and formed with a series of openings 41 through which air may pass into the space between the flaps and the nose plate for Ventilating urposes.
In the use of the evice; the shield 1 is placed aboutthe face while the strips 5 and 46 encircle the head and the supporting When theI shield is over the face of the wearer the front and sides of the face are4 covered and the apron 2 covers the chest.
lThe head piece 17 and the chin rest 18 engage the forehead and chin respectively to hold the front portion of lthe shield spaced apart from the face, while the nose platel and iiaps 16 protect the eyesfrom any sparks or metal fragments which may pass been adjusted `upon the head, the desired combination of plates is inserted in the carrier 33 and the latter placed in the holder 25 and the holder swung into the hood 192 The eyes of the wearer are thus protected from the intensity of the welding flame.
If desired the holder 25 may be constructed from a piece offoraminous metal as shown in Fig. 11 and when thus formed the protecting plate is an integral part of the carrier.
It will 'be noted that the plates 34 may be slipped into and out of the carrier by way of the open end thereof and may be used either single or in combination with one another according as it is desired to control the effect of the light on the eyes. o l
The protectingplate in front of the difioo beneath the shield. After the shield has iso ferently colored transparent plates 24, is preferably although not necessarily formed of brass or material having analogous properties, as the brass will throw oil' any metal fragments which may strike the same.
While I have herein shown and described certain preferable forms of my invention, by Way of illustration I wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated as modifications and variations may be made within the scope of the claims and Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
