E. W. CORNELL PAPER FILE AND HOLDER.
N0. 583,0 30. Patented May 25, 1897.
FFICE.
PATENT EVAN W. CORNELL, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN.
PAPER FILE AND HOLDER.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 583,030, dated May 25, 1897. Application filed February 19, 1896. Serial N0- 579,869. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LEVAN W. OORNELL,a citizen of the United States, residing at Adrian, in the county of Lenawee, State of lllichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Files and Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a paper file and holder; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out particularly in the claims.
The object of the invention is to provide simple and effective means for holding a paper or papers in such manner as to firmly retain them in place, to prevent their being soiled by handling, and in which the arrange ment is such as to enable them to be readily placed in the vfile or holder and easily and quickly removed when desired, which object is attained by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved paper file and holder. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section through the body of the holder, showing the position of the papers therein. Fig. 3 is a like sectional view showing the fingers or bars of the holder forced tightly together, as when clamping the papers.
Referring to the letters of reference, A designates the body of the holder, which is made, preferably, of wood and of such length as to accommodate the width of the papers to be placed therein and which consists of a series of segmental bars or fingers b, substantially V- shaped in cross-section and tapering slightly toward their outer ends, the acuminated points or corners of which converge toward a common center, but which stand normally distant, leaving an open space a between them.
This improved file or holder is provided with a suitable handle B, which may be an integral part thereof and which is provided or holder by sliding them between the fingers 1) thereof, so that the acuminated point of one of said fingers will corner into the fold of the paper, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, the pages D of the paper extending outward on either side of the finger through the openings (1. When the desired number of papers shall have been placed in the holder, the elastic band e is placed over the ends of the fingers and drawn downward, so as to clamp them together and securely confine the paper or papers between them.
While I have shown this improved holder as consisting of a series of V-shaped fingers adapted to be clamped together to confine the papers between them, it is evident that an efficient holder may be made by employing but one such finger fitting into a V -shaped groove and confining the paper therein by cornering into the fold of said paper. This wedging of the paper into the V-shaped groove of the holder by the corresponding wedge -shaped finger securely retains the paper in the holder, rendering it impossible to withdraw the paper from under the confining-finger without first releasing said finger, effecting, as a whole, a perfect, simple, and inexpensive paper file and holder.
Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a paper file and holder, the combination of a body portion consisting of a series of converging V-shaped fingers free at their outer ends and arranged to form a series of spaces between their adjacent faces, said finring adapted to embrace their free ends to clamp them together.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
