OF BRUGES, BELGIUM.
BURNER AND APPLIANCE FOR SUPPORTING INCANDESCENT GAS-MANTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,985, dated May 18, 1897. Application filed December 31,1895. Serial No. 573,968. (No model.) Patented in Belgium November 18, 1895, No. 118,476.
To all whom t may con/cern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH DE BROUWER, a subject of the King of Belgium, and a resident of Bruges, Belgium, have invented certain new and useful Improved Burners and Appliances forSupporting Incandescent Gas-Mancap of refractory material l), perforated with numerous holes of small diameter, (two or three millimeters,) and under the cap o one or more metal or wire screens may be fitted; second, of a metal ring sliding on the cylinder ct of the burner, which can be fixed at any desired height by a set-screw or other device; third, of a mantle d of mineral substances of the kind employed in the Auer and other similar incandescent gas-burners. This mantle is inclosed in an envelop or basket of platinum wire e, the two-viz., the mantle and its supporting-envelop-being in contact with each other.
The platinum-wire basket rests upon and can be attached by any kind of device to the burner-ring.
Figure 1 of the drawings shows the various constituent parts of the burner. a is the cylinder; b, the cap g c, the ring; CZ, the mantle, and ethe basket of platinum wire, (indicated in thick black lines.)
Thisburner when used does not require any kind of chimney, either of glass or mica, as with ordinary incandescent gas-burners, but globes may be employed, if desired. They are not, however, an integral part of my invention, and I therefore make no further reference to the mode of using them.
The essential feature of my invention is the mantle of mineral substances adapted to a supporting-basket of platinum wire, and I willnow describe the manner in which these mantles are formed.
I take an envelop or basket of platinum wire, its size being in proportion to that of the mantle, which can by a little experience be ascertained for each particular case. The mantle before it is calcined is suspended by its upper part and in the center of the basket. (See Fig. 2 of the drawings.) The mantle is then calcined in the usual way, care being taken to keep the base of the mantle well open. Vhen this first operation is complete, the mantle, with its basket, is placed over a burner similar to the one above described but with the ring removed, (see Fig. 3 of the drawings,) and the liame is kept well in the center of the mantle, which is then lowered into the flame and then gradually raised, the strength of the current being increased at the same time.
The high temperature of the ame and the strength of the current operate together on the incandescent substances in fusion and swell or expand the mantle, and its walls thus adapt themselves to the basket, taking the shape of the latter. The parts of the mantle below the basket are cutoff and the mantle is fitted to the burner-ring, as shown in Fig. I.
The'process of manufacture above described effects the following advantages:
First. The mantle formed undera high temperature has a much higher resisting strength than those as ordinarily made, the mineral substances being more agglomerated independently of the wire basket.
Second. The mantle inclosed in its basket part-'akes of all the resistance of the latter, and especially when in use and brought to high temperature it resists the action of the current and the flame of the atmospheric burner with forced air-supply, whereas without the platinum-wire basket it would be liable to separate itself from its position over the burner or to swell or get out of shape and finally be fixed to the ring d of the burner it may be placed in any position, either vertical, inclined, horizontal, upside down, 85o., which is entirely novel in this kind of lighting.
IOO
to be adjusted on the burner, and an incan- I descent mantle of mineral substances adhering,` to the said envelop, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my I5 name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH DE BROUlVER.
