To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownrthat We, DANIEL KELLOGG BAKER, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and CHARLES H. GREEN, of the city, county, and State of New York, as-
signors to the NEW/YORK BRAss COMPANY, a corporation, have-invented a-certain new and useful Improvement in Gas-Burners, (never yet patented in any country g) and we do herero by declare that the following is a full, clear, aud exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention consists in a mechanism so I 5 constructed and arranged as more completely to regulate the pressure and flow and greatly to increase the illuminating-power of gases, Whether natural or manufactured, when used for the production of lightl In the attempts to usefor illuminating purposes thenatu'ralgases it has been found that no ordinary burner produces a satisfactory light. Indeed, the distinguishing characteristie of the combustion of the natural hydrocarbon gases seemsto be the production of intense heat. While they have largely taken the place of coal, coke, and other fuels in the smelting and workingl of metals, and in other processes of the arts and manufactures 3o which require the greatest heat, yet for the purposes of illumination they have usually proved flickering and unsteady, and their combustion, while producing great heat, has usually aiforded very little light.
Our invention is designed to obtain from the combustion of natural gases a light of great illuminating power and of uniform steadiness and brilliancy.
The mechanical part of our invention is 4o vdescribed as follows:

A is an elongatxl tube fastened at its lower extremity, in the usual manner, to an ordinary gas-pipe, and through which the gas is introduced to the apparatus. It opens into the `funnel-shaped cap B, which tends to regulate and equalize the pressure of the current of gas, while at the same time subjecting it to the heat of the iiame.
