SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,954, dated May 18, 189'?.
Application filed October l, 1896. Serial No. 607,608. (N mOGl-l more, in the State of Maryland, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Perforating and Embossing Characters, more especially in what are known as Hat-Band Perforators 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, an d exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in machines for perforating or embossing characters and has the following objects in view: first, the perforating or embossing of characters in or on circular objects-c. g., to perforate, stamp, punch, or emboss initial letters in the sweat-bands of hats; second, the perforating or embossing of characters in or on irregular or somewhat bulky obj ects-e. g., to perforate, stamp, punch, oremboss initial letters in the pockets of satchels, tongues of shoes, &c. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of my machine, showing two of the stamps in position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the machine.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout both views.
1 represents the top of afable or stand upon which the machine is placed. Upon this table is secured the main frame of the machine, which consists of base 2, a tubular shaft 3, secured to or cast onto base 2, and anvil et, upon which the stamp in use is operated, and which is also secured to or cast onto base 2. Thus anvil 4, base 2, and hollowr shaft 3 form, as it were, the main frame of the machine. In the upper end of hollow shaft 3 in Fig. 2 is shown a counting mechanism. On the top of base 2 and at the bottom of shaft 3 is a projection or shoulder forming a bearing in which are placed balls 50, thus forming a ball-bearing support for the carriage or rotatable carrier 5. This carrier revolves around hollow shaft 3 and has secured to it, near its periphery, trunnion-bearings 6 by means of screws 7. In these trunnion-bearings 6 are journaled, by means of pins 9, the body of the stamp S.
Thus the stamp is capable of vertical movement around pins 9. On the side of the stamp-body S remote from the cutting-surfaces is lever 10, in which is a recess 11, and in which recess is journaleda roller 12, adapted to operate upon the surface of cam 13. This roller 12 is introduced to ease the movement of lever 10 on cam 1 8.
13 is a cam rigidly secured by key 14 to the main frame, said cam having an opening on the side nearest the anvil et sufficiently to allow the stamp immediately overthe anvil 4t to rest upon the same, the periphery of said cam 13 being so shaped that it bears against roller 12 and lever 10 of all the other stamps not directly over anvil 4, depressing the same, and thereby elevating the stamps out of the way of objects which I may wish to introduce into the stamp located on the anvil 4.
15 is a bracket or an arm for carrying the power or operating mechanism for operating the stamps and is rigidly secured to the hollow shaft 3 by means of key 14, thus forming a rigid connection with the hollow shaft 3, cam 13, base 2, and anvil 4. At the outer upper end of this bracket 15 and directly over the anvil 4L is an eccentric lever or cam 16, working upon pin 17, and has attached to it handle 18 and is for the purpose of operating lever-cam 16.
24 is a nut or cap which is threaded onto hollow shaft 3. and performsthe service of more securely holding the bracket 15 on the hollow shaft 3.
Referring now to the stamps, 25 is the cutting plate or counter, which may consist of either a male or female die or a platen.
26 are needles which are rigid in stampingblock 27, or in lieu of needles I may use a stamp or a die. Stamping-block 27 is s'ccured to its hollow body-guide 28, which contains the retaining-spring 29.
' 30 is a bridge, secured by screws 30', spanning the space in the stamp-body S in which the stamp-block 27 works, and serves as a lower support for spring 29. This bridge also passes through slots on diametrically opposite sides of hollow body-guide 28 and is arranged to operate in such a manner that the spring 29 will hold the stamping block and needles normally open. 31 is a plunger operated by eccen tric-lever 16 and acts upon hollow bodyguide 2S.
32 is a bearing cast onto bracket 15 and acts as a lower guide for plunger 3l. Above bearing 32 bracket 15 is bored larger te receive a spring 33.
is a spring for the purpose of normally holdingplungerl againstlever-eam 16. This spring bears against a shoulder on the plunger 3l at its upper end and rests against a shoulder in bracket 15 at its lower end.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The stamps, consisting` of the body 8, needles 26, stamping-bloc i 27, cutting-plate or counter 25, hollow body-guide 2S, spring 29, and bridge 30, are individually swung around until the desired character is over the anvil 4. The roller 12 will then have passed into the recess of the cam 13, thereby allowing roller 12 and lever 10 to rise and the desired stamp to go down on the face of the anvil l and below all of the other stamps. The sweat-band or other article to be stamped is then inserted into the stamp between pins 2G and the cuttingL plate or counter 25. In this posit-ion I am ready to use the operating or power mechanism for forcing the pins Je through the said sweat-band or other article inserted. The operation of the power mcchanism is as follows: The handle 1S normally is in a vertical position, thereby having the least radius of the lever-cam 1G bearing against plunger 3l, which is kept up by spring 33, and thereby allows plunger 31 to be up out of the way of the stamps when not in use. By bringing handle 1S down plunger 3l is forced down by means oflever-eam 1G. This in turn operates upon the hollow body-guide 28, stamp-block 7, and needles 2G.
I am aware that stamps have heretofore been mounted on rotatable carriers, and consequently I do not claim the same broadly.
I do not limit myself to the particular construction herein described.
That I claim as my invention7 and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A machine for stamping characters having a plurality of stamps in which the stamp and its counter arc in juxtaposition in each stamp and the stamp and counter of such stamps as are in position to be used are out 0f alinement of the other stamps and counters; substantially as described.
2. In a machine for stamping characters the combination of a plurality of stamps in which the stamp and its counter are in juxtaposition in each stamp with means for throwing the stamp and counter ot such stamps as a re to be used out of alinement of the other stamps and counters prior to being used; substantially as described.
3. In a machine for stamping characters the combination with a stamp-operating device of a plurality of stamps and counters, each stamp and its counter being so mounted as to be capable of vertical movement independent of the other stamps and counters, and devices whereby the vertical movement is permitted and the stamp and counter brought into juxtaposition with the stamp-operating device, substantially as described.
4. In a machine for stamping characters the combination with a stamp-operating device, and a plurality of stamps and counters, each stamp and its counter being so mounted as to be capable of vertical movement independent of the other stamps aud counters, and devices whereby the vertical movement is permitted and the stamp and counter brought into juxtaposition with the stamp-operating device et an anvil in alinement with the said operating device; substantially as described.
5. The combination with a machine for stamping characters having a plurality of stamps and counters each stamp and counter of which are jointly and movably mounted independently Vfrom the other stamps and counters, of means for moving each stamp and counter consecutively into different horizontal planes; substantially as described.
(3. In a machine for stamping characters the combination with a movable carrier of a plurality of stamps and counters, cach stamp and its counter being so mounted on the said movable carrier as to be capable of vertical movement independent of the other stamps and counters; substantially as described.
7. In a machine for stampin g characters the combination with a rotatable carrier of a plurality of stamps and counters, each stamp and its counter being so mounted on the said rotatable carrier as to be capable of vertical movement independent of the other stamps and counters; substantially as described.
8. In a machine for stamping characters the combination with a plurality of stamps and counters, each stamp and its counter being so mounted as to be capable of vertical movement independent of the other stamps and counters of means for moving said stamps and counters vertically; substantially as described.
9. A machine for stamping characters having a plurality of stamps in which the stamp and counter arc in juxtaposition in each stamp and the stamp and counter of such stamps as are in position to be used are in a different horizontal plane from the other stamps and counters; substantially as described.
10. In a machine for stamping characters having a plurality of stamps in which the stamp and counter are jointly movable in each individual stamp, said stamps suitably mounted on a suitably-movable carrier, a cam so arranged to throw one or more out of its original position with respect to the other stamps, simultaneously and automatically when the carrier is moved; substantially as described.

12. In a machine for stamping characters the combination of a base with a spindle attached thereto a rotatable carrier mounted on said spindle, a plurality of stamps and counters movably mounted upon said rotatable carrier and means for controlling the relative movements of the said movably-mounted stamps and counters mounted on said rotatable carrier; substantially as described.
13. Amachineforstampingcharacters having a plurality of stamps and counters said stamps and counters being jointly movably mounted, and rollers attached to said counters to engage and Work upon a cam control- In testimony whereof I affix my signature 3o in presence of two witnesses.
