My invention relates to themechanical production of metallic printing plates and has for its object to. impart tothe,cha-rac-` ters or the like which lare thus produced the ,appearance of work cut by hand.,

To enable the depth of the impression ofY the type in the vmetallic printing plate to be accurately fixed, a scale is provided on the spindle e and a pointer u on the slide c.

The thickness or width ofthe metal washers p isy determined in the following manner: ',Ihe individual characters, letters for example, are cut in the knownv manner on the end surface of a type bar it. According totheA kind of letter, the individual parts of same project laterally for a certain distance sidewise from an imaginary. central plane, for instance the Ycentral plane ofthe type bar. As shown in F ig'll, the letter B for example Vwould project sideward from the dotted line indicating the central plane, leftward for the distance l and Vrightward for the distance 1. vThe letter E extends leftward for the distance 2 and rightward for the distance 2 in a lateral direction,
and so on. If it be desired to stamp the letters B and E in succession, the die is pushed from the central line of the letter B as far as the central line of the letter E. The distance movedis the sum of the two adjacent projections, that is to say l and 2, plus the free space s between the two letters. If now the washers be of such a thickness as is equal .to the lateral projection of the letter toward the one side, plus half the width ofthe space, then the distances separating the individual characters can be fixed by arranging thesewashers in successive order. If, for instance, the work BERLIN is to be stamped in the plate, the' grouping of' washer 2'equal to 2y plus 1,1sa5ve the washers according to Fig. 11 is as follows: For the first impression, the pressure member must be in position over the central plane of the letter B;` for the next impression it must be over the central plane of the letter E, and so on. Therefore, for the first letter of the word, the right hand washer must be inserted, and the left hand washer for the final letter, While for the intermediate letters both washers must be slipped on. Hence, in Fig. '11,.the 'washer 1 corresponds to the right half of the letter B. Then follow the washers 2 to 9, two each for the letters E R L I, and the washer 10 for the left half ofthe letter N, the thick` ness of the washer l being, accordingpto theV above statement, equal to l plus SE# that of 2v that of Washer s and so on.

The two washers l, 2 are then'taken off, and the slide c is moved so that the stop g Vbears against the washer 3, A whereupon the type bar bearing the letter B isreplaced in the guide g by the bar provided withfthe` letter E, and so on.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is l.y In an apparatus for makingv sunk stampings, the combination of a support; an adjustable member member carried on said support; and loose detachable pieces interposed between said members.
2 In an apparatus for making 4sunk stampings, the combination of a support; an adjustable member and a type operatlng membery carried on said support; and pieces interposed between said members andl corresponding in width to distances between a given line of the letter and the line midway between such letter and the adjacent 'letter of the respective letters to be` stamped. l
3. Inll an apparatus for making sunk stampings, the combination of a base; a support held thereover; a slide on said support and adapted to guide type; means for pressand a type operatingk IOS ing the type toward the base; a sliding member adjustably secured to the support; and a plurality of pieces interposed betweensaid member and slide.
4. In an apparatus for making f sunk stampings, the combination of 'a base; a support held thereover; a slide'on said support and adapted to guide type; means for pressing the type toward the base; a sliding member adjustably secured to the support; and a plurality of pieces interposed between said member and slide, and `corresponding respectively in width to the distances between the median line oi' the letter and the line midway between such letter and vthe adjacent letter of the letters to be stamped.
5. In an apparatus for making sunk stampings, the combination of a base; a support supported over said base; a slide slidably mountedfon said support and provided with a guide for receiving a type; means for pressing the type toward said base; `a sliding member adjustably supported on said support; a washer carrying device on said member; and washers on said device between said member and slide and corresponding in width respectively to the distance between the center of resistance yof respectively the types and the point midway between the types and the adjacent type.

In an apparatus `for making sunk stampings, the combination of a yoke; a base late supported below the yoke; a slide slida ly mounted on the yoke and over the base plate; a guide secured to the lower part of the slide; a plurality of types adapted to be interchangeably received in the guide; means carried by the slide for press- Copies of this patent may be obtained yfor ve cents each,l by addressing the Commissioner of latents, y

Apparatus for making sunk stampings in printing plates by means of type" 'bars which are provided with thecharacters to be impressed in the plate comprising 1n Y combination a slide movable relatively to the printing plate which slide carries a guide for the type bars, means for displacing the type bar perpendicularly to the plate, a sliding member which is adapted to be rdisplaced parallel with the direction of movement oi' the slide, and detachable stops for determining the relative position of the slide amd' the said sliding member, substantially as set forth.
