NVhen the stereoscope represents a perspective view of a stereoscope is to be packed, the hook or latch F is turned 2 5 embodying my invention, omitting only the out of engagement with the said stud, the picture-holder. Fig. 2 represents a similar shaft and handle are easily pulled away from View of the shaft and handle, the latter being the lens-frame and hood, and the parts thus folded for packing. Fig. 3 represents a rear separated will be stowed together in packing elevation of the lens-frame, the hood being as may be most convenient, accompanied by 8o 0 indicated in dotted lines. the usual slide or picture-holder.
A designates the hood, which may be tacked In this specification I do not restrict myself on the lens-frame B in the ordinary way. to the specific devices shown for fastening the C designates the shaft, which fits against the shaft and division-piece to the lens-frame, as rear of said frame at the under edge thereof these may be indefinitely varied, provided the 3 5 and has the usual raised division-piece 0, means used bind the parts securely together which fits against the middle part of the rear when engaged and provide for separability, side of said lens-frame between the lenses. nor do I confine myself to the tongue and The raised part 0 is practically integral with groove shown as a means for holding the frame the said shaft. and shaft in proper relation to each other, as 4) D designates the handle, which is hinged many substitutes for such tongue and groove to the under side of said shaft, so that it may can readily be found. Any means or form of fold from the position of use, Fig. 1, to the connection between the end of the shaft and packing position, Fig. 2. the lens-frame which will prevent rotation of In the devices as thus far described there the lens-frame about the stud E (where such 5 45 is nothing new; but the shaft and lens-frame a stud is used) or which holds the plane of the are not permanently fastened together, as picture-holder parallel with a plane passing hitherto. 1. In a stereoscope the combination of a shaft with a lens-frame and a detachable fastening, the said shaft and frame being fitted together by a tongue and groove or recess, substantially as set forth.
2. In a stereoscope the combination of a shaft and lens-frame with a fastening-latch, the said lens-frame being provided with a hole, the said shaft having a headed stud which protrudes through the said hole, and the said latch being in such position as to be turned into engagement with the said stud behind the said head thereof, for locking the parts of the stereoseope together, substantially as set forth.
3. A stereoseope-lens frame provided with a groove or recess in its rear face, and also provided with a hole through the said frame and a hook or latch operating across the line of the said hole, in combination with a stereoseope-shaft having a tongue or projection for fitting into said groove or recess and a headed stud protruding through said hole to be engaged by the said latch substantially as set forth.
4. A stereoscope-lens frame and hood fastened together, in combination with a detachable shaft having a folding handle, the said shaft being provided with projecting parts and the said frame being recessed to receive the said parts and provided with a catch for engaging one of them substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereto subscribed my name, at North Bennington, Vermont, this 14th day of April, A. D. 1800.
