Description

. S. H. WILLIAMS.
VBROOM HEAD.
A110. 582,249. 1' Patented May 11, 1897.
UNrrnn States PATENT rFerca.
SION H.l VILLIAMS, OF HORNBEAK, TENNESSEE.
BROOlVl-#H EAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,249, dated May 1 1, 1897.
Application filed August 17, 1896. Serial No. 602,959. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SION H. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hornbeak, in the county of Obion and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Broom -I-Ieads, of which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof, and in which- Figure l is a perspective of a broom made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar View with the broom material removed and a clamping-barshown in its open and closed positions by full and dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a detailview showing the sheet-metal socket which receives the butt-ends of the broom material, and Fig. i shows the blank from which the socket is formed.
My invention relates to a broom-head which is capable of being relled with the broom material when the latter becomes worn out.
The object of the invention is to provide a broom-head in which the material is held firmly, but removably, by a suitable clamp, so that when the material becomes worn or broken it may be readily renewed, and that without the use of tools or skilled labor.
The invention will be found especially useful in rural districts where broom-corn is ready at hand, as it may be readily applied by any farmer or housewife.
The invention will first be described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A is the broom-handle, having a wedge-like lower extremity A.
B is an oblong socket having a central aperture B/ in its closed upper end, through which the lower end of the handle passes. This socket B is formed from a sheet-metal blank, (see Fig. 4,) and its long sides b are provided with end extensions or iiaps bl, which are bent inwardly toward each other where they are overlapped by the depending end iiaps b2.
C are wire fastenings passed through apertures in the overlapped portions b b and securing them together, the middle portions of these Wire fastenings or clips C being formed with eyes O'.
D is a bail the side arms d of which pass through said eyes O', and the side arms are also bent inwardly along the upper side of the socket B, as at d', to the opposite sides of the handle, where they are again bent in the direction of the length of the handle, as at d2, to which they are secured by staples D'. The upper extremities of these portions d2 are bent inwardlyand driven into thehandle, as at d3, and the lower ends of the side d are connected by the integral cross-bar d4.
` E is an angular clamping-barhaving an eye c at the end of its shorter arm e', which eye pivots on the lower end of one side d', and the long arm c2 of the clamp extends parallel with the cross-bar d of the bail. v E/ is a catch in the form of a loop pivoted to the other side arm d and adapted at its free end to engage the free end of the clamp-ingbar E and hold it firmly in its closed position.
l/Vhen the parts are in the position shown.
in full lines, Fig. 2, the broom material is inserted with its butt portions loose in the socket B and around the wedge-like end B of the handle, which projects to or beyond the bars d4 E. After a sufficient amount of material has been thus inserted the clamping-bar E is swung to the position shown in dotted lines and there locked byits catch, and the broom shown in Fig. l will be the result. By having the handle extended to or just beyond the point where the broom material is clamped the strain is received by the handle, and a clamp thereby greatly relieved from strain.
The clamping-bar and bail together form a separable clamp below and connected with the socket D and the handle.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim is- 1. The combination with the centrally-apertured socket having rigidly-connected sides and ends and adapted to receive the loose buttends of the broom material, of a separable clamp comprising a bail having its side arms secured to the ends of the socket, and connected a considerable distance therebelow by a cross-bar; the upper ends of the side arms being bent toward each otherfor connection with the broonrhandle, and an angular clamping-bar hinged at one end to one side bar to clamp the broom material against said crossbar and a catch for connecting the free end of the clamping-bar to the other side arm, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination with a centrally-apertured socket, the broom-handle extending at its lower end through said aperture, and a bail having its extremities secured to the handle with its side arms bent around the top and ends of the socket and connected to the socket ends; the lower ends of said side arms being connected by a cross-bar, of a clamping-bar hinged at one end to the lower end of one side arm and separably connected at its free end to the lower end of the other side arm to clamp the broom material against said cross-bar, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with the broom-handle,
the centrally-apertured socket thereon having external eyes at its ends, of the bail having its cross-bar below the socket and its side arms extended up through said eyes, thence inwardly to and along the opposite sidesV of the handle and having inwardly-bent extremities driven into said handle, staples also securing the bail ends to the handle, of an angular clamping-bar hinged by its shorter arm to the lower end of the bail at one side thereof and a catch on the side of the bail opposite said hinging-point to engage the free end of the clamping-bar, substantially as set forth.
Il. The combination with a centrally-apertured socket having overlapping end iaps or extensions, fastening-Wires securing said overlapped parts together and provided with eyes, of a clamp for the broom material, consisting in a bail having its side arms extending through the said eyes and then bent inwardly for connection with the handle, a clamping-bar hinged at one end to the lower end of the bail and a catch hinged to the bail to engage the free ends of said clamping-bar, substantially as set forth.
SION l-l. VILLIAMS.
