LL15. BRADLEY. TOBACCO PIPE.
No. 582,006. Patented May 4, 1897.
- WITNESSES c/dzi @042, 1
ATTOBIVEYJ:
rnrns LOUIS FREDERICK BRADLEY, OF CEDAR RAPIDS, IOIVA.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 582,006, dated May 4, 1897. Application filed September 10, 1896- Serial No. 605,433. (No model.)
To (tZZ whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I,LoUIs FREDERICK BRAD- LEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cedar Rapids, in the county of Linn and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever found throughout the several views.
This invention relates to tobacco-pipes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved tobacco-pipe which is provided with means for preventing the saliva and other fluids of g the mouth from entering the main bowl of the pipe, and also for preventing dust, dirt, and other substances from passing fromthe bowl of the pipe through the stem into the mouth.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompan ying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a sectional side view of my improved pipe; Fig. 2, a plan view thereof; Fig. 3, a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 a section 011 line 4 4.
In the practice of myinvention I provide a pipe which comprises a bowl A of the usual form, and said bowl is also provided with-the usual stem B,with which is connected a mouthpiece c, and the stem B is secured to the bowl near the top thereof, and said stem and mouthpiece maybe of any desired form. I also provide a removable attachment D, which consists of the vertical plate or partition E,which is mounted in a groove F, formed in the side walls of the pipe and in the bottom thereof just in front of the opening and the central bore G of the stem, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and said partition-plate E is provided at its top with a flange II, the outer edge of which is circular in form, as shown in Fig. 2, and provided with a depending rim K, and the flange II when the partition-plate E is in position rests on the top of the bowl adjacent to the stem, and the bottom of said partition plate E is provided with a number of small perforations L.
In practice the tobacco is placed in the main part M of the bowl, and a small chamber O is formed on the opposite side of the partition-plate, and the smoke passes through the perforations L in the partition-plate into chamber 0, and then through the stem D.
It will be observed that saliva or other fluids from the mouth cannot pass into the main chamber M of the pipe without passing through the perforations L, and these perforations are preferably arranged slightly above the bottom of the chamber 0, and itwill also be observed that the dust and dirt from the main portion of the bowl cannot pass into the stem without passing through said perforations L and rising to the end of the bore Gin the chamber 0.
The perforations L are preferably made very small, and the attachment D may be removed for cleaning purposes whenever desired.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Iatent- A pipe having a bowl, a stem in connection therewith and engaging said bowl near the top thereof, said bowl having grooves formed in the inner side and near the stem, a partition-plate provided with perforations therein adapted to move in said grooves, a flange secured to the upper edge of said partition-plate and having its outer edge segmentally formed, a rim on the said outer edge adapted to fit on the outer side of said bowl adjacent to said stem all of the said parts being combined substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 1st day of September, 1896.
LOUIS FREDERICK BRADLEY.
