No. 581,680. Patented Apr. 27, 1897.
WJZI/VE'SSES UNTTEn STATES PATENT @EETCE.
JOSEPH A. SCOTT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ANNIE BRADLEY,
OF TELLURIDE, COLORADO.
PICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,680, dated April 27, 1897.
Application filed August 1, 1896. Serial No. 601,373. (No model.)
T all whom, it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH A. SCOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apper- IO tains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to picks.
My object is to provide a pick having detachable points of improved construction, as well as a novel form of eye connected to the points in an improved manner, so that when a pointbecomes dull orbroken it may be removed and be replaced by another. The different styles of points can be used whenever desirable.
Having this object in View, my invention consists of a pick of novel and improved construction, as will appear more fully in the following description and appended claim, as well as the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved pick, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
The numeral 1 designates the pick-handle. My improved pick is designated by the numeral 2. There are two detachable points, and, inasmuch as the connections of both to the eye are similar, a description of one will suffice. At is shown a projection, over the outer end of which extends a dowel 4:- Below this projection the eye is cut away or recessed to provide a mortise 5, thereby forming a small or supplemental projection 6.
The numeral 7 designates a locking-pin which has its ends received in the main and supplemental projections and extends across the mortise 5.
One of my improved pick-points is designated by the numeral 8. This is cut away on its upper face and at its inner end to provide a shoulder 9, which has a pocket 10, adapted to receive the dowel 4i, and a long tenon 11, whose end is provided with a vertical notch 12,which receives the locking-pin 7, the tenon snugly fitting into the mortise.
The numeral 13 designates a screw which passes through the tenon and the main projection. It will be observed that by removing the screw 13 the pick-point can be readily detached and another one substituted therefor and the screw replaced. The dowel and pin satisfactorily prevent the pick-point from moving laterally, while the screw holds it firmly in position. A number of the points will be furnished with the pick, so that no time need be lost when a point becomes illjured in any manner.
There are many slight and immaterial changes which might be resorted to in carrying out my invention, and hence I am to be understood as considering myself entitled to all such varied constructions as properly come within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a pick-eye which has a mortise, of a locking-pin secured to the eye and extending across the mortise, a dowel extending out from the eye, a detachable point cut away longitudinally to provide a tenon and a shoulder, the shoulder abutting on the eye and having a pocket for receiving the dowel, the tenon having a notched end which receives the locking-pin, said tenon fittingin the mortise, and a screw passing through the tenon and into the eye.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
