ALBERT RICHARD VETSZ AND HENRY IRVING STOOKVELL, OF BROOKLYN, NEV YORK.
LIGHTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,638, dated April 27, 1897'. Application tiled December 5, 1896. Serial No. 614.611. (No model) To all whom, it may concern.
Be it known that we, ALBERT RICHARD Weisz and HENRY InviNe SrookwnLL, citizens of the United States, residing' at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lighters suitable for igniting such articles as cigars, cigarettes, and the like, and by this invention the lighter is made compact and safe, as also simple and reliable in operation; and the invention resides in the novel features of construction set forth in the following' specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lighter with its lid closed. Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section along :c oo, Fig. 1. Fig. a is a view like Fig. 1, the cover being removed and the lid opened. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modication. Fig. G is a section along y y, Fig. 5.
The lighter comprises a box or case 1, having an open side closable by cover 2, which can be removably secured, as by the keyholeslot 3, engaging grooved stud 4, and by eye or perforation 5, engaging lug' or lip (i. The top 7, partly open or cut away, can be closed by lid 8,which in opening and shutting swings about stud or shaft 9. This lid 8 has an extinguishing-face or damper 10, which when the lid is closed is in damping position to extinguish the light at the igniting end 1l of the fuse 11 12. A luted wheel 13 can be rotated to feed the fuse. The fuse is guided between wheel 13 and the frame-plates 14, forming a bearing for a train of gears 15, which communicates speeded rotation from ratchet or gear wheel 1G to the friction or emery disk 17. This ratchet 1G rotates on stud or axle 9, about which lid S opens and shuts. Apawl18, jointed or pivoted at 10 to said lid S, engages and rotates the ratchet 1G as the lid opens, but glides or returns idly over the ratchet 'when the lid closes. A spring 2O may be applied to insure contact of the pawl with the ratchet.
Jointed or pivoted to the case at 21 is an arm 22 carrying a friction-face or anvil 23,
such as a piece of steel. A spring 24. insures contact of face with friction-disk 17. The opening of the lid S rotates the disk 17 in the direction of the arrow on the disk in Fig. 4:, so as to generate and throw sparks against the fuse or igniting end 11.
The device can of course be modified without departing from the invention.
In Fig. 5 in place of a pivot 2l a friction arm or steel 22 is shown, provided with lugs 2l', adapted to sit or be fastened in recesses or seats in the extension 25 of frame-plate le, said extension having an oblique or inclined face 2G, upon which the steel 22 while being inserted can have its fixed end or attaching parts 2l' slipped until the parts 21 reach the top of the extension 25, when the iixed end of the spring drops into the seats or depressions for said parts 2l at the fixed end of the spring. A spring 24 insures contact of the steel 22' with disk 17. By securing this spring 24 to the top 7 such spring is secure against loss. Then worn, the steel 22 can be readily removed from its seat and a fresh steel inserted.
The frame-plates 1l being located at one end portion of case 1 a space or housing is left free/in the case for containing the supply portion 12 of the fuse ll l2. Should the ignition at fuse end 11 not be extinguished on the closing ot' the lid S and the fuse continue burning, such burning fuse being contained in case l will not he apt to do damage, as, for, example, to clothing, when the case should be in a pocket.
The case l is of course practically made or shaped of metal.
Vhcn the lid is closed, the fuse part 11, being inclosed between the damper 10, the front or edge of frame-plate 14, and the contiguous parts of case 1 with cover 2, will be promptly and ellicctively extinguished.
lV hat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A lighter provided with an emery or friction disk, driving mechanism substantially as described for the disk, frame-plates for supporting the driving mechanism and disk, and a friction-steel made to contact with the disk, said frameplates having an oblique-faced seat portion for removably supporting the steehand a spring for holding the steel to its v seat substantially as described.
2. A lighter provided With a friction-disk and having a lid made to aotnate said disk,
said lid being provided with an extinguish ing-face or damper extended from or in advence of the lid to Contact With'the source of light or llame to extinguish the latter on the closing of the lid, substantially as described.
In testimonT whereof Wehave hereunto set Io ourhands in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT RICHARD VVEISZ. HENRY IRVING STOCKWELL.
