INVENTOR ATTOH/VfYS.
RS co, we're-Luna" WA maTou u c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NAPOLEON LEMAIRE, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
PlCKER-STRAP FOR LOOMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581 ,482, dated April 2'7, 189").
Application filed August 10, 1896. Serial No. 602,256. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON LEMAIRE, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Picker-Strap for Looms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations showing the opposite sides of my improved strap, and Fig. 3 is a plan.
Picker-straps as heretofore made consisted of a stiff strip of leather having a leather strap at each end. These straps were passed one around the picker-stick and the other around an arm of the picker-shaft, and the free end of each strap was secured to the stiff connectingstrap. Picker-straps made in this way soon wear out because of the severe strain put upon the straps and are, moreover, hard to adjust, a change in the adjustment necessitating the removing of the nuts on the ends of the bolts which connect the straps to the strip; and the objects of my invention are to make a pickerstrap which will wear better, will costless, and will be much easier to adjust than any heretofore known.
My picker-strap in its best form is made up of strips A, B, and O of metal, the strip B being bent to form a hook I) and the strip 0 being bent into the form of a staple. These three strips are fastened together by bolts D D, the bolt D passing through the strip B, the free end of the hook I), and the strip A, while the bolt D passes through the strip B, the free ends of strip 0, which is placed between the pieces A and B with its closed end toward the bolt D, and through the strap A. The bolt D and the hook I) form a loop to hold the picker-shaft, and the bolt D and the strip 0 form a loop for the picker-stick. The bolts D D pass through the blocks E E, (preferably made of pressed paper,) which are placed between the strips A and B and serve to make a better bearing for the plOkQPStlCk and arm of the picker-shaft.
The strip A has a lengthwise slot a and the strip B has three lengthwise slots 19 b 12 These are adjusting-slots and form an important feature of my invention, for it will be clear that the long slot at in strip A and the shorter slots 19 b b in strip B provide for the adj ustment of the length of my picker-strap and also for the adjustment of block E.
I prefer to place a cushion of leather H or the like inside the hook b, as this renders the operation of my strap less noisy.
The main feature of my invention is the construction of a picker-strap of two strips A and B, one of which is bent to form a hook I), and which are connected by bolts to form an aperture at one end for the picker-stick and at the other end for the arm of the picker-shaft.
I am aware of the patent to Webster and Dobson, No. 502,108, dated July 25, 1893; to Follett, No. 408,703,dated August 13, 1889, and to Chase, No. 470,984, dated March 15, 1892, and disclaim all shown in those patents.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The improved picker-strap above described made up of strip A; strip B bent to form the hook I), staple-shaped strip 0 and connecting-bolts D D all combined to form separate loops for the picker-stick and actuating-arm substantially as described.
2. The improved picker-strap above described made up of strip A provided with adjusting-slot a; strip B bent to form the hook I) and provided with adj listing-slots b, b and b staple-shaped strip O and connecting-bolts D D all combined to form separate loops for the picker-stick and actuating-arm and to provide for the lengthening and shortening of the picker-strap and its loops.
NAPOLEON LEMAIRE.
