B. H. GRANT. I DISPLAY COUNTER.
No. 581,345. I PatehtedApr. 27, 1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT EEicE,
EDGAR HERBERT GRANT, OF MARSHALL, MICHIGAN.
DISPLAY-COUNTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,345, dated April 2'7, 1897. Application filed January 11, 1897. $erial No. 618,836. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDGAR HERBERT GRANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshall, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Counters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in display-counters, and especially to the provision of a display-rack which is adapted to be held in a suitable casing forming a part of the counter and so located as to come opposite one of the drawers in the counter, which rack may contain a sample of the contents in such compartment or drawer.
The invention relates, further, to the provision of a series of display-boxes which are adapted to be located in the front facing of a counter and are so arranged as to be securely held in place and not able to be removed until a drawer is removed, after which by pressing on the rear side of the displaybox the same may be taken out for the purpose of filling or removing the contents there,- of, as may be desired.
A further part of the invention relates to the peculiar mechanism by which the displayboxes are held to the front face of the counter, which consists of a lug carried on the casing between the sections containing the displayboxes, which lug is adapted to engage in a recess in the bottom of the display-box, while the upper edge of each box is provided with a lug which is adapted to engage in a springcatch carried in the casing immediately above the upper edge of the box.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I clearly'illustrate the invention in the accompanyin g drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, indicate like parts throughout the several views,in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a displaycounter, showing the arrangement of the display-boxes. Fig. 2 is a cross-section through the counter and display-box; Fig. 3, detailed views of the spring-catch and the lug secured to the display-box.
Reference being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the counter, which is of ordinary height and is made up of a series of compartments, each of which is adapted to receive a drawer B. In front of each drawer is carried a display-box C, which is made, preferably, with a glass front D, and each box is recessed out at G, into which recess a lug E is adapted to register to hold the bottom part of the display-box to the easing E. The upper side of the rectangularshaped display-box may be left open, if desired, and along the upper edge of each end piece is provided a lug F, which is designed, when the box is pushed back, so that its front face will be flush with the outer face of the counter, to engage in a recess in the springcatch G, which catch is adapted to be secured to the under face of each of the strips E, It will thus be seen that as the display-boxes are forced back and locked in position they can not be tampered with from the front face of the counter, and in order to have access to the boxes it will be necessary first to withdraw one of the drawers of the counter and then by applying a slight pressure to the rear side of the display-box it may be'readily forced out.
It will be noted that the spring-catch G is composed of a single piece of spring metal bent upon itself, with a slight space intervening between the two ends, and the spring end is recessed, as shown at g, while its extreme free end is slightly upwardly turned, and owing to the rounded heads of the said lugs the spring-catch will readily yield when it is desired to remove the box.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a display-counter, the combination with the counter having an open framework from side to side, of the display-boxes each having a hole in its lower edge, of the lug E, designed to be seated therein, and lugs F on its upper edge, of the spring catch G, formed of a single piece of metal bent upon itself and having an upwardly-extending portion by which the catch is secured to the front face of the casing about the display-box, the opposite end of the catch having a depression g designed to engage over a lug F, whereby the said display-box is locked in place and allowed to be removed by pressure applied to the 10 rear side of the box, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
