IMPROVEVD ANCHOR.

To ZL whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GOURNEY C. PATTI- sON, of' the city and conn ty of Baltimore, and State ot' Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Anchor; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of one form of anchor with my improvements att-ached; and Fig. 2, an elevation `of a portion of the anchor-frame, illustrating in red lines the movement of the duke and its position within the recess on the stationary guards.

The nature of my invention consists in the combination of projecting rests and guards with the pivoted arms and lukes of an anchor in sucha manner as that the uppermost- Ilukes of the pivoted arms shall receive support, while the lower flukes are embedded vor caught, and be so guarded as that the chain or cable cannot catch or foul therewith also, in the combination of two or more pivoted fluke-arms in a rectangular, triangular, elliptical, or other suitable frame, the upper part being so formed as to fend oi' from the rlukes the cable or chain, wherebyI avoid the use of the iron or wooden stock, and obtain with a greatly reduced weight of lnetal greater strength in the anchor and better grappling capacity. i

The iiuke-arms A of my improved anchor are pivoted at a' in slots formed for the purpose in the shanks B, so as to swing or work freely therein.

Upon opposite sides of the shanks B, I setime act as rests or supports therefor, retaining them in either of the positions illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

I contemplate, when desirable, making the curved guards C solid, instead of having them of round iron, as illustrated in the drawings, though in either case their opposite faces will be curved and provided withthe notch or recess a.

Three fluke-arms, A, are shown pivoted to the shanks B at x, though I contemplate the use of one or more,intending to employ either one or more shanks, to vary inV number and form according to the shape of anchor desired.

By the use of my improved recessed curved guard-rests, in connection with. the pivoted fluke-arms, all liability to the chain or cable catching or hooking in any part of the anchor` 4 is obviated, for when the vessel at anchor changes her position with the wind, or when the cable, from any cause whatever, is travers ing either face of the anchor, it cannot in any way hook or catch in the points or ends ofthe flukes, but, being compelled to pass over the guards, is permitted to swing clear of every part where there is any liability to its fouling.

One of the principal advantages derived from the use of my improvements, as described, consists in the diminution in the weight of metal required to manufacture my improved anchor for any given sized vessel, as its sliperior grappling capacity is such as to render it unnecessary to employ the immense weight of metal heretofore used.

what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
