UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
DANIEL J. DEEGAN, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
PRINTERS PAG E-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,271, dated April 27, 1897.
Application filed July 27 1896. Serial No. 600,602. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,DANIEL J .DEEGAN,a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printers Page-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to produce an adjustable fastener for pages of type, the idea being to provide a fastener which may be applied to any-sized pages of type and which will hold the types comprising the page the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, letters and numbers being used to designate the several parts.
Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating the operation and use of my novel page-fastener,and Fig. 2 is a perspective of the page-fastener detached.
A denotes my novel page-fastener as a whole; B, a chase of ordinary construction; 0, blocks of either metal or wood, which are ordinarily termed furniture, and D quoins by which the fastener may be secured in the chase.
My novel fastener consists, essentially, of four angle-pieces, which for convenience I have designated as a, b, c, and d. These angle-pieces are provided, respectively, with interlocking tongues 1 and grooves 2. In the drawings I have shown part a as provided with two grooves, part b as provided with two tongues, and parts 0 and d as each provided with one tongue and one groove. It will be noted that the inner faces of the tongues reg ister with the faces of the angle-pieces containing the grooves, so that the outer types of the page on the four sides are provided with a firm support, and the possibility of movement of any of the types is wholly pre vented. It will also be noted that the outer faces of the portions of the an gle-pieces which contain the grooves are solid. This is in order to give absolutely firm support to the tongues, so that they cannot move in any way except directly in and out of the grooves. In order to lock the angle-pieces together after adjustment, I provide set-screws 3 in the portions of the angle-pieces which are provided with grooves, said set-screws extending down through the tops of the angle-pieces containing the grooves and engaging the edges of the tongues of the other angle-pieces, thereby locking the tongues in the grooves.
To adjust the fastener to any-sized page within its limits, it is simply necessary to loosen the set-screws, place the fastener about the page of types, ordinarily in the galley, set the angle-pieces of the fastener close up against the types by sliding the parts relatively to each other, and lock the angle-pieces together by means of the set-screws. In use it is not necessary to turn the setscrews down hard to hold the parts in place, so as to permit the page to be carried about. This is a convenience in that it permits the tongues to move inward slightly in the grooves should additional pressure be applied by means of the quoins in locking the page in a chase.
4 denotes scales upon the angle-pieces and the tongues which may be graduated to indicate ems of type, and which I find very convenient in use.
It will be seen that in. the construction shown the angle-pieces are adapted to slide freely upon each other and that the outer faces of the grooved portions are flush with the outer faces of the pieces at the corners from which the tongues project. Therefore a plurality of the fasteners may be placed side by side in a chase and squared up parallel with each other without being distorted in position by inequalities in the outer walls. This is also true when but one device is used in a chase, as shown in Fig. 1, for in this case the furniture or blocks 0 will bear equally against. all portions of the device except the tongues. If desired, when considerable lengths of thetongues are exposed; slugs may be interposed between the furniture 0 and the backs of the tongues.
It is essential that the locking mechanism shallbe accessible from the upper edges of the device, for the reason that whether one or more of the fasteners are secured in one chase the action of the quoins is to cause the tongues to slide somewhat into the grooved portions. While the fastener is in this compressed condition, it is desirable to turn the set-screws so as to lock the a'ngle-pieces, in order that, when desired, the device may be removed from the chase without releasing the type held in the fastener.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. A printers page-fastener consisting of four angle-pieces provided with tongue and groove portions adapted to slide freely on each other, the outer faces of the grooved portions being solid to provide firm support for the tongues and flush with the outer faces of the pieces at the corners whereby a plurality of said fasteners may be placed side by side and parallel with each other in a chase, and looking mechanism for the sliding portions accessible from the upper edges of the device.
2. A printers page-fastener consisting of four angle-pieces provided with tongue and groove portions adapted to slide freely on each other the outer faces of the grooved portions being solid to provide firm support for the tongues and flush with the outer faces of the pieces at the corners whereby one or more of the fasteners may be squared up and locked in a chase, and set-screws in the upper edges of the grooved portions adapted to bear on the tongues to lock them in adjusted position.
I11 testimony whereof I arfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL J. DEEGAN.
