Description

- P. J. SGHARBAGH.
ADJUSTABLEVYMOP HEAD.
No; 580,959. Patented Apr. 20, 1897.
NITE TATES ATENT ADJUSTABLE MOP-H EAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,959, dated April 20, 1897.
Application filed December 10, 1896. Serial No. 615,213. (No model.)
: sisting in the main of three distinct parts that is, astationary part, a movable or adj ustable part, and a ratchet-spring designed to hold the movable part secure when the mop is placed between it and the stationary I part.
The invention consists in the construction hereinafter more fully described and claimed and as illustrated on the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a front view. Fig. 2 is a side View, and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The mop-head comprises the stationary part A, firmly secured by ferrule F to the mopstick M; the movable or adjustable part B, made of heavy wire or other suitable material, and the ratchet-spring S, holding the movable part B in place when adjusted to the mop.
The stationary part A consists of a stem E, having secured thereto a cross-piece 0, prov ded at each end with holes h h. Said stem E is inserted in the mop-stick M and secured there by the ferrule F.
The adjustable part Bis passed through the holes h h, which are of sufficient size to allow said part to slide easily therethrough, and then bent, as shown in Fig. 1, and the ends are passed through holes in the sliding cross- 10 piece 10 and securely riveted thereto.
The spring S, provided with ratchet-teeth '1, holds the said cross-piece p in place, as
shown in Fig. 2. By pulling ring R, secured at the end of ratchet-spring S,'the teeth T are released from their hold on cross-piecep, so that the movable part B can be raised to adjust the mop, which is placed between B of movable part B and cross-piece O of stationary part A. To prevent the ratchet-spring S from being pulled out too far, a staple 00 is secured to the mop-stick M. Nowwhen the teeth T of spring S are released from crosspiece 19 by pulling spring S back on its ring R the movable part B can be raised or lowered by the cross-piece p sliding on ferrule F and parts B in holes h of cross-piece O, andwhen allowing spring S to spring back to its ordinary position the movable part B is secured at the desired position.
I am aware that prior to my invention mopheads with adjustable parts have been made. I therefore do not claim such a combination, broadly; but
WVhat I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- As an improved article of manufacture, an adjustable mop-head comprising a stem E, carrying a cross-piece 0, having a perforation at each end, an adjustable part B moving through the holes in the ends of the part 0' and riveted firmly in holes in the sliding collar p, the spring S provided with the ring R and the ratchet-teeth T engaging with crosspiece 19, and the staple 00 secured to the mopstick M, all substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses, this 3d day of December, 1896.
PETER J. SOHARBAOH.
