SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,911, dated April 20, 1897. Application filed November 4, 1896. Serial No. 611,018. (No model.)

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. USHER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usef ul Improvement in Attachments for Lasting Shoes, which improvement is fully set fort-h in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a device or attachment for controlling the flaps of shoes during second lasting, the same consisting of a plate of material and a series of hooks which are adapted to enter the eyelets in the flaps or quarters thereof, said plate being adapted to retain its position without connection with a last.

It also consists in providing means for simultaneously and uniformly drawing up said flaps while on the last.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a device or attachment for lasting shoes embodying my invention, the same being applied in position. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the device removed from the shoe. Fig. 3 represents a section on line mm, Fig. 2.

Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a shoe, and B the flaps or quarters thereof, the latter being separated, as at O, and provided with eyes or eyelets D for the reception of lacings or strings, as usual.

E designates the attachment embodying my invention, the same consisting of the piece F, of leather or other suitable pliable material, somewhat curved and provided with the longitudinal rows of hooks J, Which are firmly connected with said piece, and,,furthermore, strengthened or braced by the burs or washers H, the upper or outer ends of said hooks projecting toward each other. As said piece or plate F is pliable it may bend and so 0011- form to the last and quarters with which it contacts.

The operation is as follows: The piece is placed behind the flaps B, and the hooks are passed through the eyelets D. The parts K L of the last are forced into position, it being noticed that the flaps are now controlled by the hooks and prevented from spreading or shifting in any direction, the upper portion of the shoe particularly being tightly held on the last.

Should it be desired to draw up the flaps, and consequently the adjacent parts of the shoe, it is accomplished by grasping the upper end E of the piece F and pulling the same, the effect of which is evident, it being seen-that the draft is regular and uniform on both flaps, and that the holding of said flaps in the desired position on the last is accomplished without the employment of lacings or cords, nails, or other devices, which are liable to break and become displaced.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. An attachment consisting of a plate and rows of hooks thereon, said hooks being adapted to enter eyelets in the quarters of a shoe, and said plate being formed of pliable material adapted to conform to-the places of contact.

2. An attachment consisting of a plate, rows of hooks thereon, and a grasping-piece projecting from the upper end of said plate.
