Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
oTTo RI'IEGEE, on ZURICH, SWITZERLAND.
PROCESS OF PRODUCING IMITATED WOODEN INLAID WORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,805, dated April 13, 1897.
Application filed June 1 1896. Serial No. 593,942. (No specimens.) Patented in Germany March 16,
France July 16,1894, No. 239,991; in Belgium J 1 18, 1894,110. 111,039,
1894, No. 79,321; in and in Austria September 25, 1894, No.
To all whmn it III/my concern.-
. Be it known that I, OTTO RIIEGER, a citizen of the Swiss Republic, residing at Zurich, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Process of Producin g Imitation of Wooden Inlaid Work, (for which I have obtained patents in Germany, No. 79,321, datedMarch 16, 1894; in France, No. 239,991, dated July 16, 1894; in Belgium, No. 111,039, dated July 18, 1894, and in Austria, No. 44/5,137,dated September 25,1894;) and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
In producing the imitation of inlaid woodwork presenting light parts on a darker ground heretofore the light parts have been produced by drawing or designing the same. According to the present process the dark color alone is brought upon the Wood, while the light color remains that of the natural wood.
The process is performed in the following manner: Good white fine-veined pine wood is covered with dark oil-varnish and thereupon is brought a coat of light water-color.
Upon the ground thus formed the design is traced in the usual manner and painted out by means of a strong solution of soda which has been thickened by an addition of honey. When the surface is dry, it is coated with a varnish of copal. This varnish will evidently not stick to the parts having been painted with the soda solution, and when the surface is washed off the soda'solution painted thereon will come OE and the design will remain in sharp outlines.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- Process of producing an imitation of wooden inlaid work, which consists in covering the wood with a coating of light oil and watercolor, in covering the parts which should appear light with a strong solution of soda and in coating afterward the whole surface with varnish, and finally in washing oi the soda solution, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
oTTo EI'IEGEE.
Witnesses H. RABBART, I-I. SCHILLING.
