E. ROSE. BOTTLE STOPPBR.
No. 580,510; .PatentedApr. 13, 1897.,
WWW/mm: I
UNlTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMMA ROSE, OF COLOGNE, GERMANY.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,510, datedApril 13, 1897. Application filed February 24, 1896. Serial No. 580,509- (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMA ROSE, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, and a resident of 38 Hausaring, Cologne, in Rhenish Prussia, Kingdom of Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoppers for Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein tothe accompanying drawings.
Hitherto it has been impossible to guard against the risk of full bottles being opened by unauthorized persons during their conveyance from one place to another. This has been universally regarded as a great draw back, especially when considerable time was taken up in the transport.
The bottle-stoppers in use up till now, both corks and the so-called patent stoppers, have been tried and found wanting so far as protecting the contents of the bottles from being tampered with was concerned. It has been comparatively easy for dishonest persons to open the bottles, abstract part of their con tents, fill up the empty space with water, and replace the stopper without anyone being the wiser. I
The present invention does away with this drawback. When a bottle corked with one of these contrivances is opened, the latter is immediately and completely destroyed.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings shows a closed bottle; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of an open bottle; Fig. 3, an upper View of Fig. 1; Figs. 4 and 5, the arrangement of the cork stopper.
The stopper in general consists of a cork suspended by means of a hook or a similar contrivance from a bow a b. The cork may be of any shape. It has a slit in about the first third of its length, and is thus divided in such a manner that there are two corks, which are only joined in the layers 0 to the right and left of the slit. In the slit is an inserted piece of metal f, the ends of which 9 project from the cork and bend upward. The bows it serve to suspend the stopper in the closing bow. The full bottle is now corked with the stopper, the part 00 being pushed through the bows h, and the closure is finished by laying b in the front hooked part of a.
When the bottle is opened, the two parts 0 d of the cork are separated from each other in the plane a, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the stopper is completely destroyed. The part (1 is then drawn out with the corkscrew.
The brand of the firm may be burned into the bottom of the cork.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Stopper for bottles for preventing their contents being tampered With, consisting of a cork slit at right angles to its longitudinal diameter, and having a metal plate f in said slit, and a bow attached to said plate, whereby on opening the bottle the upper part of the cork above the slit is torn off, thus making the stopper useless.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
EMMA ROSE.
