G. K. MONROE. l ROLLING BLAGKBOARD HANGER. No. 580,324. Patented Apr. 6, 1897.
NrTn STATES PATENT rricn.
GILBERT KMONROE, OF VOOSTER, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPHINE MON- ROE, OF SAME PLACE, AND EDNA L. MONROE, OF LIMA, OIIIO.
ROLLlNG-BLACKBOARD HANGER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,324, datedAprl 6, 1897.
Application led March l0, 1 8 9 6.
.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GILBERT K. MONROE, of Wooster, in the county of Vayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use- 5 ful Improvements in Rolling-Blackboard I-Iangers; and I do hereby declare `that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of lo reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification. y
This invention is an improved device for suspending rolling blackboards, screens, dto. of large size; and its object is to provide a I5 supporting device which can be attached to sidewalls, ceilings, dac., and adjusted to any position or place desired in a manner to operate satisfactorily and certainly.
It further consists in the novel arrangezo ment of the wind-up devices of the partitions, all of which and minor other features of the invention will be clearly understood from the following description in connection with the drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of the suspending devices without the cover or springcasings. Fig. 2 is an enlarged partly longitudinal section of the same, showing the blackboard or screen and the springcasings in po- 5o sition. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the brackets; Fig. 4,a perspective view of one of the adjustable boxes.
The suspending device consists principally of two end brackets A, which may be of any 3 5 suitable contour and are shown rectangular. Each bracket has on one edge a shallow lat eral iange B, in which are slots h for the passage of fastening bolts or screws, and along this flanged edge are shallow teeth a, which 4o bite into the wall and prevent lateral move ment of the bracket, which might cause the bolts to slip out of the slots b. In the main portion of the bracket are four slots O C c c', Islots O O being in line with each other and 45 at right angles to slots c c', which are also in line with each other. It might be said that these slots radiate from a common center and are ninety degrees apart. Near the corners of the bracket are holes d for the engage- 5o ment of a bolt D? upon which is journaled a Serial No. 582,628. (No model.)
friction-roller D, whereby the rolling partition is guided in its movements. The bolt D, with roller D, is fastened in either hole d, according to the position of the bracket.
E represents a box-casting, which has a flat 5 5 base portion E' and a U-shaped bearing portion e. The base has holes fin it for the passage of bolts F, which also transfix slots O O or c c', according to the position of the bracket, and thereby secure the box to the bracket. The slots allow considerable adj ustinent of the box on the bracket, and this is a very important feature of the invention, such adjustment rendering one size of suspending device adaptable to different lengths -6 5 of screens and to varying positions of the brackets necessary to hang the boards or screens in the desired position.
After the brackets are putin place and the boxes bolted thereto a shaft G is placed between and supported by the boxes and is secured thereto by pins or bolts g, which transiix the ends of the shaft and the U-shaped portion e of the boxes, suitable holes being provided in the boxes and shaft for bolts g.
Shaft G thus forms a tie between the brackets. It also forms the support for the spring actuated windin g sleeves upon which the screen is wound.
As the invention is especially designed for flexible boards made of wooden slats, like flexible or rolling partitions, and the ordinary curtain-shade spring-rollers are unt for use with such heavy screens, therefore, instead of making shaft G rotary, I make it rigid and place thereon a number of sleeves I-I, which are supported on the shaft by collars h, and within each sleeve is a coiled spring I, one end of which is fast to the shaft G and the other end to the sleeve, so that the spring will act to rotate the sleeve on the shaft. One end of the flexible board J is attached to the several sleeves, so that when pulled down or out the springs are tensioned.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent thereon, is-
l. The combination of the end brackets having radial slots substantially as described,
with the adjustable boxesv secured to the roo brackets by bolts transxing some of said slots, andthe screen supported in said boxes,
slots C, C', and c, c', in combination with the box E having U-shaped portion e, and the securing-bolts F, and the xed shaft G, the spring-actuated sleeves H on said shaft, and the screen att-ached to said sleeve, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aiiix my signature in presence 0f tWo Witnesses.
GILBERT K. MONROE.
