ROLLER-AWNING.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED L. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller-Awnings, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide simple means for protecting an awning from wear while being rolled and unrolled and from the action of the weather.

In what it consists, its mode of constructlon and manner of operation will be fully set out and illustrated in the following specification and drawings accompanying the same and forming a part hereof.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device with the awning rolled up and protecting plate cut away.

Fig. 3 is an end view showing means for operating the roller.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view, showing a convenient manner of construction where the length is greatly abnormal.

Fig. 5 shows an end view of the container with edges at the slot crimped or bent.

Fig. 6 is an end view of the container with the strengthening bars in the turned over edges at the slot.

Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in each of the figures.

Having reference to the drawings, 2 designates the tube or container which is constructed of a single piece of sheet metal and preferably rolled into a tubular form with a longitudinal space or slot 4 between the meeting of the edges of the container, through which slot the awning cloth 5 passes when it is rolled and unrolled. For the purpose of draining oif any water that may collect in the container there are formed a number of openings 9 through the base of the container when in position.

For the purpose of strengthening the container 2 of the awning 5 and also to protect the cloth from wear when it is being rolled and unrolled, these edges are bent into rolls 6 and 8, or into crimps or sockets 11. The roll 6 is bent upwardly upon itself and the roll 8 downwardly upon itself, though the direction of the bend may be reversed. These rolls 6 and 8 and plaits 11 mav be double if necessary. ther strengthening the container 2 there may be inserted in each of the rolls 6 and 8, a bar 10.

To further protect the awning when substantially rolled up, except a portion of one end projecting through the slot 4, there is secured to the container 2 a plate 15, that is curved at the end and may be telesconed into.

the end of the roll 6, which plate projects some distance over the slot 4E and over the end of the awning when rolled up. In this manner no rain or sunshine can contact any part of the awning. The awning is supplied with the usual weighted bar 16 to hold the awning taut while it is operated.

In sustaining the container 2 in a horizontal and operative position, I provide brackets 18, preferablv made in two parts, the part 20 attached to the wall of the building and formed into a half moon at its lower end and adapted to engage the lower side of the container 2 and sustain it and the other part 22 of the bracket, removably attached to the part 20 and curved to clasp the container over the top.

In the center of the container 2 is mounted a roller 25 to which the awning 5 is at tached, and on which it is rolled. The roller is formed into a pin 26 at its ends which have their bearings in brackets 28 secured to a support.

On one end of the roller 25 is mounted preferably a chain-wheel 30, (though other means may be used to operate the awning), around which passes an endless chain 32 which runs down and around another chain- Wheel (not shown) attached to the wall of the building.

Where the awning is to be used of abnormal length it may, for convenience of construction, be manufactured in sections, as above set out, and these sections be telescoped into each other as shown in Fig. 4:, but the construction is the same whether there be one or a plurality of sections.

Having now described my invention what I claim is:

1. In a device of the character described, a roller, an awning attached at one of its ends to the roller, a rod attached to the other end of the awning, a cylindrical container comprisin telescoping sections and housing the awning and roller and having a longi tudinal slot through which the awning passes, the edges of the container at the slot being helically curled, and a downwardly and outwardly inclined plate forming a *eather shield havin a helically curled edge interlocked with t 1e curled edge of the container above the awnin said rod and one end of the awning when the awning is wound onto the roller being located outside the container and directly beneath the said plate.

2. In a device of the character described, a roller, an awning attached thereto and adapted to be wound thereon and unwound therefrom, cylindrical container for the awning and roller having a longitudinal slot through which the awning passes, the edges of the casing at the slot being bent over providing smooth surfaces over which the awning travels a rod attached to the end of the awning and located outside the casing, and a plate forming a weather shield interlocked with the bent edge of the casing above the awning. v

3. In apparatus of the character described; a roller; an awning attached to the roller to be wound thereon; means to support the roller; a substantially cylindrical container for the roller and awning wound thereon, said container being provided upon its forward side with a longitudinal slot, said container being provided at the upper edge of the slot with a locking device and in its lower portion with drain openings; means to support the container; means to rotate the roller; and a plate having a locking device to coact with the first named locking device to attach the plate to the container at said first named locking device, said plate projecting forwardly for a substantial distance and serving as a shield for the roller and awning wound thereon.
