FREDERICK L. VERNON, OF NEWTON, IOWA.
MEMORANDUM DEVICE.
Patented Apr. 20, 1915.
Application filed November 8, 1913. Serial No. 799,905.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK LVERNON, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Newton, Jasper county, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Memorandum Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in memorandum devices, and especially to that type of devices adapted to be mounted upon a telephone standard or some supporting body adjacent thereto, and which have memorandum strips mounted upon resiliently-actuated rollers, to be unwound therefrom when desired, and myimprovements specifically consist in, first, the provision on .a resiliently-actuated roller of the plurality of hooks for detachably attaching the curtain or flexible strip thereto; second, the use in the supporting means for the roller of elastic brackets therefor, adapted to permit of the easy insertion or removal of the roller; third, an improved form of mounting for the roller which will permit of use of both sides of the flexible strip, and the supporting of said roller conveniently and detachably upon some fixed mounting; and fourth, the construction of the roller in a suitable way to permit of the mounting and properly securing of its actuating spring therein. These objects I have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter fully described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an upper plan view of my improved memorandum device as detachably secured to a standard or support, such support being shown in cross section. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal horizontal section of said device, with parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section of the said device. Fig. 1 is a detail view of the roller of said device, with portion of a flexible strip detachably secured thereon by means of my improved securing-means.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views. 7
My device comprises a back plate 1, having integral bent-over ends 2 parallel, extending to one side, and orifice in alinement to receive detachably the ends of a shaft 4. Upon said shaft between the ends or brackets 2, and nearer one of the said brackets than the other, is fixedly mounted a solid cylinder 6 of wood or other suitable material, and a hollow cylindrical tube 3 is mounted upon said cylinder 6 in such a manner that the cylinder 6 stopsup the left-hand end thereof for a portion'of its length. It is obvious that the hollow tube 3 might be supported upon said shaft by other supporting means than the, solid cylinder 6, if desired. A helicoidal spring 7 is mounted about the shaft 4 within the tube 3, and has its left-hand end secured to the cylinder 6, while its other end extends out of the right-hand end of the tube 3, and is engaged with one side of a lip 5 punched out of the right-hand bracket 2 in such a way that when the tube 3 is rotated to place the spring under tension, the spring, when the tube is released, will, in reacting, rotate said tube in the opposite direction. This back plate 1 may be mounted upon any desired supportingmeans, such as a wall or other fixed body, or may be provided with a detachable connecting means, such as I have shown most clearly in Fig. 1. This consists in a strip of metal, whose .metal part is secured to the back of the plate 1 by. means of a rivet 8, and which is then bent away from the plate 1 at right angles at 9, and then has its end members curved around at 10, and provided with outwardlydirected terminals 16, the latter slotted in line at 17, to permit of the said terminals being adjustably secured by means of a bolt and thumb-nut 12 to fasten the curved parts 10 adjustably about some support 13, which may be a desk telephone standard or the like. The rivet 8 is of the tight-andloose variety, to permit of the plate 1 being turned about on said rivet as a pivot, so that either side maybe brought upwardly.
The cylinder 3 is preferably made of a single plate of metal bent into tubular form, with its longitudinal edges somewhat spaced apart, and with one of the edges, 18, bent inwardly to stiffen it. Integral hooks 19 are punched out from the other longitudinal edge of said tube in alinement therealong, and serve to detachably secure one of the ends of a flexible strip of paper or other material 1 1 upon'said tube, to be wound thereon. The hooks 19 are passed through slots in the curtain or strip 1 1, and pressed down to hold the strip in place. The other end of the strip, as shown in Fig. 3, has a double strip of cloth or other suitable material, 15, secured therealong, and having a space adapted to receive a cross-bar 20.
- theother side of Said cross-bar 20 serves to keep the strips permit of the ends of the shaft 4 being insorted into or withdrawn from the alined bearing-holes therein. 7
- The memorandum strip 14 may have any desired ruling printed thereon, so as to serve as a telephone directory or otherwise. The spring 7 is so wound up that it ordinarily keeps the strip wound upon the roller or tube 3, but the strip 15 can be used as'a finger piece, whereby the strip may be unwound, thereby putting the spring under tension. When the strip is released, the reaction of the spring will wind up thestrip upon'the roller. The plate 1 may be turned about on its pivot 8 to permit of the use of the strip 14. i The cross-bar 20 is made of sufficient "thickness so that when the strip 14 is released, after having been unwound, the bar and. its covering 15 are too thick-to pass through the interspace between the roller 3 and the back plate 1, thereby acting as a stop.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to-secure by Letters Patent, is: j
1. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a support having spaced projections extending to one side thereof, an open-ended roller rotatably mounted in and between said projections, a "lip struck from one of said projections and extending into the ad- 1 jacent end of the roller, a spring coiled and'having one end conwithin the roller nected therewith and its other end engaging said lip, and a strip of flexible material mounted about said roller to be unwound therefrom while placing said spring under tension.
2. A device for the purpose set forth C0111- prising a supporting bracket, a hollow roller, a shaft rotatably mounted in said supporting bracket and extending through the roller, a body fixed on said shaft, one end of said roller being mounted fixedly on and closed by said body, a lip struck from the bracket adjacent the opposite end of the roller and projecting into said end of the roller, a spring coiled about said shaft within said roller and having one end secured to said body and its opposite end secured to said lip, and a strip of flexible material secured to and roller by reaction of said spring.
3. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a support having integral apertured projections, a shaft having its ends journaled in the apertures in said projections, a hollow roller arranged about said shaft, a
lip struck from one of the projections and extending into the opposite end of the roller, a spring coiled about said shaft within the roller and having one end secured to said lip and its opposite end secured to the closure for the roller, and a flexible strip having one end attached to the roller and adapted to be unwound from the roller to place the spring under tension.
