W. G. BLAIR.
PLATE LIFTER AND TURNER.
No. 580,033. Patented Apr. 6, 1897.
WITNESSES VENTOR ifg A TTORNEYJ' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM GARBUTT BLAIR, OF BELOIT, \VISCONSIN.
PLATE LIFTER AND TURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 580,033, dated April 6, 1897.
Application filed January 9, 1897- Serial No. 618,511. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GARBUTT BLAIR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plate Lifters and Turners, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for lifting and turning bake-pans, such as are usually employed for baking pies, cakes, and for similar purposes; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and by means of which bake-pans of the class referred to may be quickly and easily removed from the oven or turned therein and otherwise manipulated as described.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved device; Fig. 2, a bottom plan view thereof; and Fig. 3, a side view, part of the construction being shown in section.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by numerals of reference throughout the several views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a device for the purpose herein specified which comprises a handle 5, one end of which is provided with a transverse slot 6,which extends around and along the sides thereof, as shown in full lines in Fig. 3 and in dotted lines in Fig. 1. I also provide a tripod which consists of a conical head 7, and which is provided with three radially and downwardly directed arms 8, and the conical head 7 is provided with an upwardly-directed tubular extension 9,which passes upwardly through the end of the handle 5 and through the slot 6, and to one side of which is secured a pin 10, said pin being adapted to turn in the slot 6.
Secured to the pin 10 is a cord or chain 11, one end of which is secured to the spring 12, which is secured to the side of the handle at 13, and the other end of the chain or cord 11 is passed around the tubular extension 9 of the conical head 7 of the tripod and through the slot 6 and carried downwardly beneath the handle 5 and secured at 14 to a slide 15, which is mounted in keepers 16, and which is provided at its outer end with a hook 17.
Mounted on the upper side of the handle 5 is anotherslide 18,which is mou nted in keepers 19 and provided with a hook 20, and the said slide 18is provided with an upwardly-directed arm 21, to which is secured a chain or cord 22,which passes downwardly through the tubular extension 9 of the conical head 7 of the tripod, and which is connected with a hook 23,which is free to slide in a slot in the lower side of the arm 8 of the tripod, and which is connected with a spring 24,which is mounted in said arm, in which is formed a longitudinal chamber which is designed to receive said spring, and the function of the spring 24: is to force the hook 23 outwardly to the outer extremity of the arm 8. The other two arms are each provided with downwardly and backwardly directed hooks 25, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
In the normal position of the hook 23 it is pressed outwardly by the spring 2 1 to the outer extremity of the arm 8, and whenever it is desired to lift or turn the bake-pan the tripod is placed over the same or the upper rim thereof, or the hooks 25 on two of the arms 8 are passed over said rim, and the hook 23 is caused to grasp said rim at the opposite side'by pulling on the slide 18 by means of the hook 20. This operation causes the hook 23, in connection with the hooks 25, to securely grasp and hold the pan by the rim thereof, and said pan may be lifted out of the oven, if desired, and when it is necessary to' turn the pan it is grasped, as above described, by the hooks 25 and 23, and then by pulling on the slide 15'by means of the hooks 17 the pan may be turned into any desired position, this turning operation being accomplished by the chain or cord 22, which is connected with the pin 10 and with the spring 12. 12 operates normally to hold the tripod in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3, in which position the arm 8, in which the spring 24 is located, is directly under the handle 5, and a slight pull on the slide 15 will be sufficient to The spring IOO turn the tripod and the pan, as will be readily understood.
This device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it is apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The herein-described bake-pan lifter and turner, which comprises a handle, in the end of which is formed a transverse slot or groove, a tripod comprising a head provided with an upwardly-directed tubular extension which passes through the ends of the handle, and through said slot or groove, said head being provided with radially and downwardly directed arms, one of which is provided with a longitudinal chamber, and a longitudinal slot in the lower side thereof, a spring mounted in said chamber, and provided at its outer end with a hook which is adapted to slide in said slot, and means for turning said tripod and for operating said hook, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described bake-pan lifteran d turner, which comprises a handle, in the end of which is formed a transverse slot or groove, a tripod comprising a head provided with an upwardly-directed tubular extension which passes through the ends of the handle, and
through said slot or groove, said head being provided with radially and downwardly directed arms, one of which is provided with a longitudinal chamber, and a longitudinal slot in the lower side thereof, a spring mounted in said chamber, and provided at its outer end with a hook which is adapted to slide in said slot, and means for turning said tripod and for operating said hook, consisting of a slide mounted on the handle, and provided with a chain which passes through said tubular extension of the tripod, and is connected with said hook, and another slide mounted on the handle and provided with a chain or cord which passes around the end of the handle through said slot or groove, and around the tubular extension of the tripod, and is connected with a spring secured to the handle, said last-named chain or cord being also connected with the tubular extension of the tripod, substantially as shown and described.
3. The herein-described bake-pan lifterand turner, which comprises a handle on the end of which is mounted a revoluble tripod, which is provided with radially and downwardly directed arms, one of which is provided with a spring-operated hook, and means for operating said hook and for revolving said tripod, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have sign ed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this -5th day of January, 1897.
WILLIAM GARBUTT BLAIR.
