JULIUS WAGNER, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF TO JACOB B. FRIOKER, OF SAME PLACE.
COMMUNlQN-CUP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,908, dated March 30, 1897.
Application filed April 15, 1896.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J ULIUs WAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, county of Berks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Communion-Oups, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates especially to communion cups or chalices; and my object is to provide a simple and advantageous construction whereby the cleansing of the edge of the cup and the protection of its contents willv be satisfactorily effected.
The invention is fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features are specifically set out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a chalice embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 shows a. modified construction embodying a portion of my invention.
A represents the body or cup portion, and B the base, of a chalice or communion-cup.
O is a central stem extending through the cup and carrying at its upper end a cover F and a cleansing device E.
The cup A is formed, as shown in Fig. 1, with an interior boss at, through which passes the portion of the stem 0 which projects above the base. The lower end 0 of the stem is screw-threaded and rigidly secured to the base, and the upper end 0 extends beyond the base of the cup to carry the cleaning device referred to.
' Upon the upper end 0 of the stem I preferably provide a sleeve D, as shown, the lower face of which is pressed tightly against a shoulder c on the stem by means of a nut C, leaving the cup A free to turn upon the main portion of the stem. Upon this sleeve is loosely mounted a ring F, which forms a cover for the cup and is arranged to turn with the latter while at the same time-left free to tilt out of its normal horizontal plane. As shown, it is caused to turn with the cup by means of ears or projections ct on the boss a, which loosely enter the ring. Above the cover-ring F and also mounted upon the sleeve D is the wiper-disk E. This disk is dished on the under side to receive and hold any suitable Serial N0. 587,593. (No model.)
wiping or cleansing material 6 and has a section (2 cut away to expose a portion a of the edge of the cup, to which the lips maybe applied, and also a portion of the cover-ringF, which is preferably of transparent material, so that the contents of the cup may be seen.
The disk E may be forced against the shoulder d on the sleeve bynneans of a nut e on the upper end of the latter, thus rigidly attaching the disk E, through the sleeve D, to the stem 0. The nut c is made removable without loosening the cap-nut C, so as to permit the ready independent removal of both the cleaning device and the cover-ring for renewing either the cleaning material or the contents of the cup.
To provide for turning the cup without necessitating the use of both hands, one grasping the base and the other the cup, I employ a rotating mechanism which, as shown in Fig. 1, consists of a ratchet-wheel or disk g, fixed to the bottom of the rotative cup, and a lever-disk h, loosely mounted between the top of the base B and the ratchet-disk g, said lever having a conveniently shaped and located thumb or finger piece 7& and a pivpted pawl h with a spring (not shown) for pressing it into engagement with the ratchetwheel. The same hand which grasps the base B may thus be used to move the cup any convenient portion of a turn in order to present a new portion of the cup-rim to the next communicant, while at the same time subjecting the remaining portion of the rim to the cleaning action.
If desired, a spring mechanism may be arranged to furnish the rotating power, the same being wound up and controlled in a manner similar to a clock-movement, but effecting substantially the same result as the simple mechanism indicated in the drawings.
The cover-ring F, as heretofore stated, is capable of tilting upon its central support, and it is in practice so tilted by the pressure of the cleaning device E as to raise its edge f clear of the cup at 6 where the wiper-disk is cut away, (see Fig. 2,) thus permitting the flow of Wine at this point, while at a point diametrically opposite the edge f is pressed tightly against the inner surface of the cup by the Wiping material a, which latter thus thoroughly cleanses the rim of the cup down to the line of contact with the cover-ring and also the cover itself.
In Fig. 3 I have indicated some features of my invention as applicable to an old form of cup in which the body A and the base are in one piece. In this construction I dispense with the boss at in the cup and also with the sleeve D, and mount both the cover-ring F and the cleaning device directly upon the upper end 0 of the central stem and provide suitable means for turning the cleaning device upon the rim of the cup, the coverring and wiper operatin gin substantially the same way as in the prcviously-deseribed construction. The means indicated in dotted lines for effecting the cleaning movement consists either of a simple handle 6 on the wiper-disk E or of a connection K to the latter, extending downward to and pivoted upon the base or standard 13 of the cup, so as to control from below the movement of the disk upon the rim of the cup.
Other modifications may be devised and certain of the features shown may be used without others, and I do not therefore desire to limit myself to the exact arrangements shown.
Vhat I claim is 1. A chalice comprising a base having a central stem rising therefrom, a cup rotatively mounted upon said stem, and having a central apertured boss inclosing said stem within the cup, and a cover-ring mounted upon the top of said boss substantially as set forth.
2. A chalice comprising a base having a central stem rising therefrom, a cup rotatively mounted upon said stem and having a central apertured boss inclosing said stem within the boss, a collared sleeve on the upper end of said stem, and a cover-ring and cleaning device on said sleeve, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JULIUS \VAGNEH.
