FAUCET AND FILLER FOR OiL CANS.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK XVAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of .Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets and Fillers for Oil- Oans, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a combined faucetand filler for attachment to oil-eans and similar packages; and it consists of the several parts and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and especially claimed.
The object of my improvement is to provide a faucet and filler of the class designated above which is inexpensive in construction, capable of being securely attached to a can, and easily and quickly manipulated.
This device enables the can to be filled as rapidly after it has been attached to said can as before, and also provides for the graduated discharge of the fluid after filling. The practice now prevalent of soldering the faucet to the can after the latter has been filled with oil is dangerous and expensive, both of which undesirable features I have eliminated by my invention.
My device can be attached directly to the can without solder or it can be soldered thereto, as will appear hereinafter, but in either event the attachment is made before filling said can.
That my invention may be seen and fully understood by others, reference will be had to the following specification and annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of a can with my device attached thereto; Fig. 2, a top view of said device with rim; Fig. 3, a longitudinal vertical section of the same on lines 00 m, Fig. 2, showing the valve closed; and Fig. 4:, a similar view showing said valve open.
Similar figures of reference designate like parts in the drawings and specification.
The metallic cylinder 1 has the flange 2 at the base and the threaded top 3. The spout 4 extends outward from one side of the cylinder 1, near the bottom thereof. The base of the cylinder 1 and the flange 2 are received into a depression in the rim 5 or the topof the can 6, and the rim-lip 7 is turned over said flange, a similar lip being provided on said can-top, thereby holding said cylinder securely in place, but permitting it to turn.
The 1i 7 extends uward at an an le from the countersunk portion of the rim 5 or the top of the can 6 to form a seat for the washer 8. When the cylinder 1 is not directly squeezed or pressed into place on the top of the can 6, the rim 5 is soldered to said top over a suitable opening. -This is done when the cans and faucets are manufactured in different localities. The movable connection between the cylinder 1 and the rim 5 or the top of the can 6 allows the spout 1 to be turned in over said can when not in use, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The washer 8, of leather or other suitable material, is attached to the under side of the disk 9, which has the central opening 10 therein, surrounded at the top by the elevated seat 11. The washer S, a little larger in diameter than the inside of the cylinder 1, fits snugly into said cylinder when in place and rests upon the lip 7, thereby forming a bottom, as it were, for the cylinder. The peculiar construction of the lip 7 serves to center the washer 8 as well as to form a convenient seat therefor.
The cup-shaped cap 12 is threaded and screws into the cylinder 1. The floor 13 of the cap 12 has the vent-holes 14 14 therein, and the holder 15 is swiveled to the under side of said floor. The holder 15 has a piece of cork or other yielding material depending therefrom to form the valve-plug 16. The holder and plug may be rigidly affixed to the floor 13, if desired. The cap 12, holder 15, and plug 16 form a valve which completely closes the opening 10 when said cap is screwed down, so that said plug bears hard upon the seat 11.
When it is desired to pour off a quantity of fluid from the can 6, turn the spout 1 over one side, if necessary, unscrew the cap 12 until the plug 16 is clear of the seat 11, and tip said can so as to allow said fluid to pass through the opening 10 into the cylinder 1 and out through said spout. After sufficient fluid has been removed from the can 6 reseat the plug 16 by screwing down the cap 12, and again turn the spout 4: over the top.
To fill the can 6, entirely unscrew the cap 13, insert the finger into the opening 10, and
remove the disk 9 with attached Washer, and then run in the fluid through the cylinder 1 and an opening in the top of said can. After filling the can 6 replace the parts as before.
Since the washer 8 is larger in diameter than the inside of the cylinder 1, the periphery of the former bears against the sides of the latter, and it is consequently retained in place with sufficient force when the cap 12 is unscrewed to prevent the unseating of the same by the fluid which passes through the opening 10.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination in a faucet and filler, of a cylinder having a spout and a flange at the base, a countersunk rim or can-top adapted to receive said base, a lip turned over said flange, a detachable disk and washer supported by said lip, a seat 011 said disk sur rounding an opening therein, a cup-shaped cap threaded to said cylinder, and a plug depending from the floor of said cap, adapted to engage or disengage said seat when said cap is screwed up or down, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination in a faucet and filler, of a cylinder having a flange at the base, a countersunk rim or can-top adapted to receive said base, and a lip turned upward at an angle from said rim or can-top, over said flange, to form a seat and retain said cylinder in movable connection with the contiguous bottom members, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
