A principal object of this invention is to provide a simple and effective liquid discharging device w hich may be incorporated with a standard liquid containing drum by merely removing the closure from the filler opening and substituting the discharging device n lieu thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which may be mounted in place of a closure at the filler opening of a liquid containing drum and which can be manipulated to force the liquid from the drum through the filler opening by compressing air above the liquid to put the liquid under pressure that is partially relieved by leading the liquid through a conduit which passes through the filler opening.
A further object of the instant invention is to prov de means for exerting air pressure through the filler opening of a drum combined with means for permitting the flow through the same opening of liquid under pressure.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. I is a view in perspective of a device embodying my invention assembled and ready to replace the filler opening cap of a liquid filled drum.
Fig. II is a plan view of an annulus and disk which constitute one form of the mounting elements for the mechanism of the instant invention.
Fig. III is a view in section taken along the line III--III of Fig. II.
Fig. IV is a view in section showing a modified form of mounting element in which the annulus and disk are integral.
Fig. V is a view in section showing a further modified form of mounting element in which the annulus portion is threaded exteriorly instead of interiorly.
Fig. VI is an elevational view mostly in section showing a modified form of my device especially designed for use on containers having filler openings too small to accommodate the forms of device illustrated by Figs. I to V.
Fig. VII is a plan view with a part in section taken on the line VII-VII of Fig. VI.
Fig. VIII is a detail sectional view showing the mechanism of a safety valve that is incorporated in the device.
In the form of device illustrated by Figs. I,'II and III the mounting elements comprise an annulus which is threaded interiorly at 11. The dimensions of the annulus 10 and the pitch of its threading 11 are the same as those of interiorly threaded standard filler opening caps which are fitted upon drums used as shipping containers for the commodity to be handled.
The annulus 10 is formed with an inwardly extending lip 12 which overlies the peripheral edge of a disk 13 having a relatively large circular collar 14 swaged therein to receive an air pump cylinder 15.
The air pump cylinder 15 has its upper end turned outwardly to form a flange 16 which overlies the upper edge of the collar 14, a resilient gasket 17 being interposed between the fiange 16 and the edge of the collar 14. The collar 14 is exteriorly threaded and a pump top 18 having an interiorly threaded depending rim is screwed upon the collar to compress the gasket 17 and thus make an air tight joint between the pump cylinder 15 and the collar 14.
The pump top 18 has an embossed central opening 19 through which passes a plunger rod 20 the upper end of which is equipped with a handle 21 while its lower end is equipped with a well known form of plunger (similar to that illustrated in Fig. VI). The lower end of the pump cylinder 15 is closed by a plug 22 having a threaded bore 2,706,586 Patented Apr. 19, 1955 into which the upper end of a nipple 23 is screwed, and screwed upon the lower end of the nipple 23 is a valve body 24 in which is mounted a spring pressed element 25 which seats against a shoulder from which it is forced by air pressure upon a downward stroke of the plunger.
The valve body 24 is provided with a port 26 through which air may flow to the lower end of a pipe 27, which delivers the air into space adjacent the annulus 10. Hence when a liquid containing drum is positioned with its filler opening uppermost and the annulus 10 is mounted upon the drum in place of the filler opening cap the pump handle 21 may be manipulated to force air into the space within the drum which is above the liquid.
A short fitting 28 threaded throughout its length passes through a hole in the disk 13 and is locked in place by means of upper and lower nuts 29 and 30 and a tube 31 leads from the fitting to the bottom of the drum. The tube may if desired be flexible to adapt the device for use in drums of various depths. A hose 32 leads from the fitting 28. The fitting 28, the tube 31 and the hose 32 thus constitute a conduit to convey liquid from the bottom of the drum to the point at which the liquid is to be delivered.
In order to avoid the accumulation of excessive pressure in the drum a safety valve 33 is fitted into an escape orifiice in the disk 13. Any suitable safety valve may be use In the form of device illustrated in Figs. I, II and III the annulus 10 and the disk 13 constitute an adapter for mounting the pump, conduit and safety valve at the filler opening. In the form of device illustrated by Fig. IV the adapter is in one piece and consists of an annulus portion 10a and a disk portion 13a. The pump, conduit, safety valve and other elements of the device are fixed to and carried by the integral adapter in the same manner as they are fixed to and carried by the separable adapter of Figs. I, II and III except that the relative positions of the pump and discharge hose fixed to the integral adapter are determined by the extent to which the integral adapter is turned to tighten it over the filler opening of the drum, whereas the disk of the separable adapter can be shifted before the annulus is fully screwed down to position the pump and discharge hose more conveniently.
The adapter illustrated by Fig. V differs from that illustrated by Fig. IV only in that the annulus portion 10b is slightly smaller in diameter than the disk portion 13a and is threaded exteriorly to enable it to be substituted for an exteriorly threaded plug in a filler opening.
The form of device illustrated by Figs. VI and VII is designed to fit over filler openings which are too small to contain both an adequately supported pump and an adequately supported conduit. In this form of device the adapter is shown as integral and as having an interiorly threaded annulus portion 10c and a disk portion 13c which has a hole through which a fitting 28c passes and in which it is locked by means of upper and lower nuts 29c and 300. The disk portion also has an escape orifice with a safety valve 330 fitted therein. Instead of having a collar therein (such as that shown in Figs. I and III) the disk portion has a cylindrical valve member 14c fixed thereto. The cylindrical valve member is much smaller in diameter than the swaged collar 14 and is threaded into a plug 220 at the lower end of a pump cylinder 15c and a valve body 240 is screwed upon the cylindrical valve member 14c to clamp it firmly to the disk portion 130. A resilient washer may if desired be used around the valve member 140 to insure that the oint is air tight. The spring pressed valve element 250 in this form of the device is of the ball type instead of the cone type shown in Fig. III. Either form of valve element may be used in either form of the device.
The same type of pump plunger 340 is used both in the form of device illustrated by Fig. VI and in the form of device illustrated by Fig. I. It has a down turned cup shaped flexible ring 35c which expands against the wall of the cylinder when the plunger 340 is pushed downwardly by means of the plunger rod 20c and the handle 21c and which contracts When the plunger is raised to permit air to pass around its edge into the lower portion of the pump.
In using either form of the device of my invention,
when the handle 210 is moved up and down air is pumped hrough the tiller opening of the drum and exertspresure upon the upper surface of liquid contained in the lrum thus forcing liquid from the bottom of the drum hrough the conduit which passes through the filler openng to the point at which the liquid is to be delivered.
It is to be understood that the foregoing description ind the accompanying drawings are exemplary only and hat the invention is susceptible to variation and modificaiion within the spirit and scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described the invention, I claim:
1. A device for discharging liquid from a container having a filler opening and a threaded closure therefor, said device comprising in combination an adapter shaped and threaded to be screwed upon such container in place of such closure, said adapter having an annulus portion and a disk portion, a collar swaged into an opening through said disk portion, a pump cylinder passing through said collar, a pump top overlying said collar and the upper end of said cylinder and fastened to said collar, a pipe leading from the lower end of said pump cylinder and terminating adjacent to said annulus portion, a plunger in said pump and means whereby said plunger may be manipulated to force air through said pipe, a fitting passing through an opening in said disk portion and secured thereto a tube depending from said fitting and a hose extending from said fitting.
2. A device for discharging liquid from a container having a filler opening and a threaded closure therefor, said device comprising in combination an adapter shaped and threaded to be screwed upon such container in place of such closure, said adapter having an annulus portion and a disk portion, a collar swaged into an opening through said disk portion, a pump cylinder passing through said collar, a pump top overlying said collar and the upper end of said cylinder and fastened to said collar, a pipe leading from the lower end of said pump cylinder and terminating adjacent to said annulus portion, a plunger in said pump and means whereby said plunger may be manipulated to force air through said pipe, a fitting passing through an opening in said disk portion and secured thereto, a tube depending from said fitting, a hose extending from said fitting and a safety valve fitted in an escape orifice in said disk portion.
3. A device for discharging liquid from a container having a filler opening and a threaded closure therefor, said device comprising in combination an adapter shaped and threaded to be screwed upon such container in place of such closure, said adapter having an annulus portion and a disk portion, a collar swaged into an opening through said disk portion, a pump cylinder passing through said collar, a pump top overlying said collar and the upper end of said cylinder and fastened to said collar, a pipe leading from the lower end of said pump cylinder and terminating adjacent to said annulus portion, a plunger in said pump and means whereby said plunger may be manipulated to force air through said pipe, a fitting passing through an opening in said disk portion and secured thereto, a tube depending from said fitting, a hose extending from said fitting and a safety valve fitted in an escape orifice in said disk portion, said annulus portion and said disk portion being independently rotatable.
