HERBERT H. HULL, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO:
`FAUCET lAND FILLl-:R FOR CANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 357,319, dated February 8, 1887.
v Application filed October 28, 1885. Renewed December 1l, 1886. Serial No. 221,283. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT H. HULL, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fillers and Faucets for Oil- Cans, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to filling necks and Yfaucets combined for oil and other similar cans, and has for its object to provide a neck with a sufficiently capacious opening to enable the can to be easily filled without -the liability to spilling or over-filling, and combining with said neck a removable stopper having a valve and valve-operating mechanism contained within it for controlling a discharge-opening and passage-way through said stopper, said opening and passage-way constituting the discharge from the can, and, further, to providev a vent in combination with the neck and stopper in such a manner that air may be admitted to the can while the fluid is being drawn off, without the liability of leak- .age through the vent.
With these objects in View my invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out inthe claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is Y a sectional view ot' my improved iilling-neck and stopper having a valve and mechanism for closing the discharge-opening from the upper side. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the lilling-neck with the stopper removed, showing a dischargelspout connected therewith and the air-venting hole. Fig. 3 is a detached perspective View of the stopper containing th valve mechanism as seen in Fig. l.
Ain Figs. l and 2 is a neck for metal cans, having indented screw-threads in its sides, at one side of which is attached a dischargespout, B. C is the hole or'opening within said neck, which leads into the can and through which the can is filled. provided a screw-threaded stopper, D, for closing the said filling-opening C. This stopper is chambered and has a hole, E, in its bottom of less diameter than the opening C, and it also has a hole, F, in one side, which registers with the spout. These two holes constitute the discharge-passage from the can to the spout. Within the chambered stopper is contained the valve and valve-operating mechanism for closing said passage-way, consisting substantially as follows: v
G is a screw-threaded stom playing in a Within this neck is screwthreaded socket, g, on the top of the stopper D, and is provided on .its lower end with a disk, H, having a flange, h,which holds a disk of cork or other suitable material, I, which covers and closes the opening E in the bottom of the stopper. A washer, of cork or other suitable material, j, lies on top of the i disk H, which bears up against the top of the chamber when the valve is drawn up, to prevent leakage around the screw.
J is a thumb-disk on the top of the screw G, for turning it by.
N is an air-vent located in the neck A at its junction with the can opposite to the spout B. A vent-opening, O, is also made in the beveled edge of the bottom of the stopper, designed'for admitting air to the can when the oil is fiowing out. The vent leads into the chamberof the stopper, and its communication with the interior of the can is shut ofi` when the valve is closed, so that no leakage or escape by evaporation can take place. By locating the vent in the point shown, the liability of oil oozing therefrom when the can is tilted for drawing oil is overcome, thus avoiding one of the defects so common in the usual vent-openings heretofore employed.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. The combination, with the neck and spout of a can, of a chambered stopper having an opening in its bottom and provided with a valve and valve-operating mechanism for controlling said opening, and having au opening in its side registering with thespout, through which the iiuid flows in discharging the can of its contents', andhaving a ventopening in its bottom to receive air from the vent-opening in the neck, all constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified. f
2. In a faucet and filler for cans, consisting of the chambcred plug having the opening in its bottom controlled by the valve and the valve-operating mechanism, substantially as described, the vent-'opening in the neck, and the vent-opening in the plug, whereby the air isadmitted for venting the can through the stopper, substantially as described.
