CHARLES E. ESTERLY, OF LAWVRENCE, KANSAS.
BUTTONER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,262, dated March 23, 1897.
Application filed March 13, 1896.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. ESTERLY, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Law clare the following to be a full, clear, and eX-- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to a buttoner for cuffs, collars, gloves, and similar articles of wearing-apparel.
The object of the invention is to provide a buttoner of this character made entirely of a single piece of wire formed into shape to produce the buttoner proper and its handle.
WVith this object in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved buttoner, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the handle in section.
A denotes a single piece of wire formed into a loop of any desired length to suit the character or kindof button to which it is to be applied. The turn of the loop, as at 1, is curved upward, as shown, and the loop is widened at its middle to adapt it to the width of the button to which it may be applied. The wire strands at each end of the loop are bent upward substantially at right angles to the plane of the loop, and when carried to the desired height one strand is folded or bent back upon itself and the other strand is turned or coiled about the Vertical strands downward until thebase of the strands is reached, where it is suitably secured. The upper coil of the handle is upset or flattened and is soldered or brazed to the adjacent coil, thereby providing a strong handle, one in which it will. be impossible for the coils and strands to separate and pull apart.
I am aware that a buttoner formed with a loop of the general contour of that shown and Serial No. 583,037. (No model.)
described herein has been in use. My improvements thereon consist in making the handle and body of a single piece of wire, and.
more particularly in constructing the handle in the manner shown, whereby a strong, simple, and inexpensive construction is provided.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a tool or implement with an integral open coiled handle, nor do I broadly claim such construction. The handle I employ embodies features and advantages not apparent in the form of coil-handles heretofore used, namely, the coils lie close together and contact and afford means for tightly grasping the handle with the fingers, and by reason of the brazed or soldered upset end and by securing the last or lower coil to the body of the button a very rigid handle is produced. Many stove-lid lifters are formed with integral coiled handles, but the coils are far apart, so as to allow of a free circulation of air between them, and as the handles are grasped by the hand it is not essential that they be as rigid as one that can be grasped by the fingers only.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The improved buttoner constructed of a single piece of wire, formed into a loop A, having the loop end turned upward in a direction at an angle to the plane of the loop, the strands at the other end of the loop turned upward parallel to each other, one strand being bent back upon itself and the other twisted or coiled about the vertical portions to form a roughened finger-grip with all the coils contacting, and secured at the base of the strands, the upper coil of the strand being upset or flattened and soldered or brazed to the adjacent coil, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES E. ESTERLY. Witnesses:
Gno. A. ESTERLY, W. O. SPANG-LER.
