r Box FASTWEB. No. 579,057. Patented Mar. 16, 1897i Nm 5% @wifi 04mg/ Nrrn JAMES F, GILLILAND, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO TI-IE ADRIAN BOX COMPANY OF NEW JERSEY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEY JERSEY.
BOX-FASTENER,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 579,057, dated March 16, 1897. Application filed Tune 5, 1896. Serial No. 594,416. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES F. GILLILAND, of Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in B0X-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide a novel, simple, efficient, and economical fastening for boxes; and it consists in the fea- Io tures of construction and in the combination or arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is an end View of a box having a slid- I 5 ing cover and illustrating my improved button in position to permit the removal of the cover. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the button in position for locking the cover in place. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal vertizo cal section taken through the box with the parts shown in the position illustrated in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the button detached, and Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal vertical section of a box having a hinged lid and having my improved button applied thereto.
A represents a box, shown in Figs. l, 2, 3, and 4 as of the class which has a sliding cover mortised into the sides. This class of box is 3o usually made with one end of the full height of the sides, in order to serve as a stop for the cover, and the cover only enters, or draws out, at one end. This requires a difference in the end pieces, which complicates the construc- 3 5 tion and also requires a fastening for the cover at the end where the cover B enters. In my improvement I can, if desired, make the two end pieces of the same height, that is, stop them both at the lower side of the mor 4o tise in the side pieces, so that the cover B will slide in and out from either end.
C represents a button, which is in the form of a circle with the arc cut off on the line G,
and is provided With an inturned circumferential flange E, adapted to iit in a circular groove F in the end of the box and a corresponding groovef in the end of the cover B.
D represents a rivet by which button C is pivotally secured to the end of the boX A.
A button C may be used at each end of the 5o box.
When the cover B is in position and either of the buttons C is in the position shown in Fig. 1, that is, with the line G below the bottoni of the cover B, said cover may be Withdrawn in the ordinary manner. Vhen, however, the button C is turned into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, it comes over the end of the cover B and flange E locks in groove f in said cover, thus enabling the button -to 6o perform the twofold function of holding the cover against endwise movement and also of locking it to the box.
It is evident that the box may be made in the ordinary manner, that is, with one end as high as the sides, and only one button used, or the ends may be alike and a button used at each end.
In Fig. 5 the boX A has an ordinary hinged cover B, and the flanged button C serves as 7o a lock to hold the cover closed.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a box having formed in one end an areshaped groove, of a cover 75 having formed in one end an arcshaped groove adapted, whenthe cover is closed, to register with the groove in the boX and form with the last-named groove a complete annular groove, and a button pivoted to the end of 8o the box and provided on its inner face with an arc-shaped flange engaging and traveling in said grooves, said button having a segmental portion cut away, substantially as described.
JAMES F. GILLILAND.
