Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEETGE.
ADOLPH HEUSTON, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPRovED PADDLE-WHEEL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,901, dated September 11, 1866.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADoLrE HEUsToN, of the city of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new, original, and useful Improvements on PaddleNVheels to be used in propelling steamboats, ships, and other vessels, and for other purposes, and not known or used before my invention or prior to this time; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings7 and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l shows the inside view of the wheel 5 Fig. 2, the end view; andFig. 3, the arm, showing the lever-hooks and mode of attaching the saine to the arm, and also thelever-regulator.
lhe movable revolving and feathering paddleA is to be constructed ofwood or an y metal or other material, and to be combined and connected with the pivots B B and the paddlehooks C C, the whole to be arranged and ad,- jnsted as indicated, and so as to produce the desired effects.
The pivot B, which may be constructed of any shaped piece or bar of iron,or other metal or material, isfashioned and formed into pivots at each end, the piece or bar being Y suftlciently longer than the paddle to allow the formation of the pivots, as required, the piece or bar to extend on and along the outer or upper edge of the-paddle under the bands, forming the hooks C C, and to be fastened securely to the paddle, the pivot to operate in an aperture or incision in the outer end ofthe arm of the wheel and in the bore of the socket or plate D, to be fastened on the outer side of the arm, as indicated.
The paddle-hook C is to be made of a band of iron or other metal extending around the paddle, except its inner or lower edge, the ends of the band projecting outwardly from the paddle, at such angles with the dat side thereof, far enough to form hooks, as shown by C C, the band to be fastened securely with nails,
screws, or bolts, or otherwise, to the paddle atA its end. The band may also, if desired, be connected by a piece across the inner edge of the paddle.
The paddle-stop E, which shall consist of a projection of a triangular or other shape, and of any size, from the arm of the wheel, or of a separate piece of metal or other material is inner side of the arm of the wheel upon a bolt or axis connected with and sufficiently secured to the arm, the axis being placed at such point on the arm that the notches or hooks Cr G of the lever shall interlock with the paddle-hooks C C, and let go thereof on the revolution of the wheel and the vibration of the lever, as desired.
The regulator I, consisting of a band or plate of iron or other metal or substance, of such thickness and width as desired, is to be fastened to the arm of the wheel at such point below the axis of the lever that it shall regulate and control the vibrations of the lever. The lever shall be placed between this band or plate and the arm of the wheel; or this band or plate may be so shaped, adjusted, and fastened as toform a box also for as much of the lever below the axis as desired., The whole is to be so arranged and adjusted as to produce the desired results, as indicated.
. What I claim as my invention is- The combination of the paddle A, the pivots B B, and hooks C C with the stop E and lever F, and the regulator I, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
