Description

UNITED STATES PATENT (.)EEIcEc CHARLES F. DUVALL, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN SIDE GEAR FOR THRASHING-MACHINES, 86C.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,882, dated September 11, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, C. F. DUVALL, of the city and county of Milwaukee, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement Yin Adjustable Side Gears for Thrashing-Machi1'1es,and for other Machinery; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being'had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a view of the bed-plate; Fig. 3, a view of the traversing-plate.
Similar letters of reference in each of the iignres indicate corresponding parts.
The nature of my invention consists in arranging a side gear upon a revolving platform, so that power may be connected with it without moving the machine to which it is attached should it be impracticable to station the horse or other power in the desired position.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its constrnctionand operation.
A is the wooden frame-work. B is a bedplate made of metal.; C, a` traversing-plate resting on the bed-plate; D, a crowning pillowblock; Efdriving-shaft, with a Acog-wheel on its inner end; F, a vertical shaft, with pinion on lower end meshing into cog-wheel on shaft E; G, pinion meshing into cog-wheel on4 npper end of shaft F; H H, set-screws which fasten traversing-plate G to bed-plate B; I, coupling on end of shaft E to connect it with the tumbling-rod of a horse-power or other shaft communicating power; K, housing for the gear to keep dirt and' wet from the machinery; L, slots in the traversing plate through which the set-screws pass; M, holes in the bed-plate for set-screws H to screw into.
Operation: Loosen set-screws H, and'then turn the traversing-plate, so as to make the shaft E point from the frame-work in any direction required; then tighten the set-screws, and all is firm.
The holes in the bed-plate B may be made slots, and the set-screws have nuts on their lower ends to tighten up with, if desired. This would permit the traversing-plate to turn as far as desired in either direction without taking ont the set-screws.
My invention will be found valuable where it may be necessary to set a thrashing-machine in some 4position on account of wind, or for some other cause, where a horse-power could not be set to connect with it if the gear was fixed and could not be used in only one position.
Its advantages are so obvious that I will not enlarge upon them.
lhat I claim as my invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Bed-plate B, traversing-plate C, shafts E and F, pillow-block D, and set-screws H H, or their equivalents, combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
GHAS. F. DUVALL.
