SHOE-BLACKING CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,732, dated March 16, 1897.

Application filed July 13, 1896. Serial No. 598,919. (No model.)

Be it known that I, CHARLES E. ECKEELD,

a citizen of the United States, residing at- Uhrichsville,in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Blackin g Cases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which .it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to blacking-boxes.

My object is to provide a blacking-box of ornamental appearance and cheap and improved construction, and the details of its arrangement and adaptation of parts will appear more fully hereinafter.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved blacking box when closed; Fig. 2, a view .in cross-section thereof, and Fig. 3 a perspective view showing the improved top reversed as when the box is ready for use.

The numeral 1 designates a blacking-box of ordinary construction, which is preferably provided with a lower tray 2 for the reception of the different articles during the blacking operation'. At each end of the box there is located a bracket 3, which is provided with a head 4, having a vertically-disposed opening therein.

The numeral 5 designates my improved reversible cover, which is preferably provided on its outer face with a piece of carpet or .other fabric 6 to suit the taste of the user.

My improved foot-rest is connected to the lower face of the cover. This foot-rest is a double one, so that it can be used when the person is standing at either end of the blacking-box. It is provided with two rests 7 and 8, upwardly

open portions

9 and 10, and a double and depressed portion 1l, which is broadened at its center and is adapted to receive the ball of the foot. This form of footrest possesses the advantage over the old style that it can be used from either end of the box without the necessity of moving about or shifting the position of the box, thereby avoiding much annoyance and saving time and labor.

16 and 17 designate arms, which are preferably constructed of tubular material, being provided with upper screwthreaded ends 18, which are received in the pivot-blocks and have lower heads 19, said arms being adapted to freely slide through the heads of the brackets connected to the box.

The operation is as follows: The cover is first raised until the heads of the arms come in contact with the respective brackets. The cover can now be turned or reversed and allowed to drop back on the box, where it will be rmly held in position. When the cover is reversed, the double foot-rest is presented and may be used.

Slight and immaterial changes of construction might be resorted to without departing from any of the advantages of my invention, and hence I consider myself as being entitled to all such variations as come within the spirit and scope of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a blacking-box the combination with the box proper, of a reversible cover, and arms adjustably connecting the cover to the box.

2. In a blacking box or casing, the combination with the box proper, of a reversible cover, and arms pivotally connected to the cover and slidably connected to the box.

3. In a blacking box or casing, the combination with the box proper, of brackets connected thereto, a reversible cover, blocks pivoted to the cover, and arms connected to the pivot-blocks and slidable in the brackets.

4. In a blacking box or casing, the combination with the box proper, of brackets connected thereto, a reversible cover, blocks pivoted to the cover, and arms freely slidable 9 through the brackets being provided with lower heads and upper ends which screw into the pivot-blocks.
