BINDING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,561, dated March 9, 1897.

Application filed T 1395- ing or Binding Trousers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to an improved machine for providing trousers with braids or borders, its object being materially to simplify these operations and thereby to enable them to be more neatly and rapidlyperformed than it has been possible to do before.

The device for applying edging or borders to pantaloons forming the subject-matter of this invention has the advantage over devices used for the same purpose heretofore that the edging-strip is guided solely by a smooth channel having space only sufficient for the passage of the two layers of the folded edging-strip, thus dispensing with a separate guide or spring, whereby the objectionable and customary holding or retarding of the strip is avoided and the work can be done quicker and more uniformly than has heretofore been possible.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specificatiomand in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the views, Figure 1 is a plan view of the device with the cover closed; Fig. 2, the same with the cover opened. Fig. 3 is a front view of Fig. 2 with the braiding-strip inserted. Figs. 3 and 3 are details. Fig. 4 shows the device with the cover closed.

A plate a is secured to a sewing-machine in such a manner that the machine-needle in descending passes through an aperture a, provided in the said plate. On the plate a there is secured a box or case b,having a flat lateral extension or projecting plate 0.. 'By raising the lid d of the case b a channel or passage 6 is uncovered. The width and depth are so proportioned that when the said lid is closed the strip of material f, which is to form the border, will just fit the said passage 6 when folded once or doubled up, Fig. 1.

As is well known, the usual process in edging trousers is to fold up the band of material f, which is to form the edge or border,

In order to accomplish this in accordance with the present invention, the lid d is opened and the strip or band f is so inserted that it takes up the position in whichitis represented in Fig. 1, with the back of the fold to the left. The two pieces of material f f are passed, respectively, over and under a projecting plate or shoulder g, formed on the case or box, and are retained in position and guided by the left longitudinal side b of the said box. The material, which is moved along by the cloth-feeder in the usual way, is stitched to the band or border at the point 01/. Now it will be understood that the said band is so guided by the guide-groove e that it moves into required situation of its own accord without requiring any assistance from the operators hand, in which position it may be readily joined to the two pieces f f of the cloth. The main point therefore is that the two pieces f f are in close contact with the side I) of the box, which insures careful attention, and in itself is a sufficient guarantee of rapid and easy operation.

According to the position which the box I) occupies in relation to the stitching aperture or eye a the width of the border may be varied, the stitch itself changing accordingly its position in relation to the material, so that a piece of the braid f, of greater or less width, as the case may he, becomes Visible when the edging or braiding is completed.
