DAVID PIERCE, OF WVEST BEND, \VISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM A. FOREST, OF SAME PLACE.
HARN ESS-TOO L.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,419, dated March 9, 1897.
7 Application filed May 1, 1896. Serial No. 589,819. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it, may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID PIERCE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of West Bend, in the county of Washington and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Harness- Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to save time, labor,- and expense in the manufacture of cruping of the same; and said invention consists in a construction and combination of parts constituting the implement hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents an elevation of a crupper-shaper constructed according to my invention, a former embodied. in the implement being partly broken away; Fig. 2, a plan View of a portion of said implement, the former being partly in horizontal section; and Fig. 3, a view on the plane indicated by line 3 3 in Fig. 1.
' Referring by letter to the drawings, A rep- 1 resents a bar of angular contour in a'transshown.
verse direction, and said bar is shown in one piece with a right-angle shank B, that may be provided with a foot 0, as is also herein The foot 0 is apertured for the engagement of clamp bolts or screws D, by which it is connected to a bench E or other suitable support, but it is practical and may I, the upper surface I) of the block at each side of the web being preferably beveled and serrated, as herein shown.
Pivoted to the web I, astraddle of the same,
. is another block J, having curved and preferably serrated faces 0 in opposition to the surfaces 6 of the former block. The block J is provided with a handle K, that may be in one piece therewith, as herein shown.
The pivotally-connected blocks H J and handle K constitute what is hereinafter designated as a clamp.
A screw-threaded rod L is arranged to turn in block II and exert pressure against the former F, the outer end of said rod being squared for the engagement of a wrench or key.
The former F is a block shaped at its rear to conform to a crupper-loop of predetermined size, and interchangeable formers of varying dimensions may be utilizedin connection with the other parts of the imple- .ment herein set forth.
.made from metal, and none of them are lia ble to break or get out of order.
In practice, the parts being assembled as herein showq, the loop portion of a moistened crupper M is laid on the former F and its ends are clamped between the blocks H J by a suitable adjustment of handle K, after which the screw-rod L is adjusted to move said former rearward on the supporting-bar. By'the operation just described the crupper is readily drawn into accurate standard shape and left to dry, so as to maintain its form when removed from the implement.
All the cruppers shaped by the implement herein set forth have the same accuracy of finisha result that is impossible to attain by hand -the time required to shape a crupper is lessened, and the work is not only less laborious, but can be performed by other than skilled labor.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A crupper-shaper consisting of a supporting-bar, a former loose on the bar longitudinally'of the same, a block on said bar provided with a set-screw, an upper central web and beveled serrated faces on opposite sides of the web; another block pivoted to the web astraddle of the same and provided with a handle, as well as curved serrated faces that are opposite the serrated surfaces of the rigid block; and a screw-rod adjustable in said rigid block to exert pressure against said former.
2. A- crupper-shaper consisting of a bar for attachment to a suitable support, a former loose on the bar longitudinally of the same, a clamp having detachable connection With the bar, a set-screw carried by the clamp for adjustment against said bar, and a screw-rod adjustable in said clamp against the former.
3. Acrupper-shaper consisting of abar having a right-angle shank, a former loose on the bar longitudinally of the same, a clamp having detachable connection With'the bar, a seti screw carried by the clamp for adjustment against said bar, and a screw-rod adjustable in said clamp against the former. a 4. Acrupper-shaper consisting of abarhaving a right-angle shank provided with a foot I DAVID PIERCE.
