Beit known that we, GEORG KHLER, hotel proprietor, and KARL SGHUCHAEDT, joiner, subjects of the Grand Duke of SaxeWVeimar- Eisenach, residing at Veimar, in the Grand Duchy of SaXe-Weimar-Eisenach and German Empire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tables, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to a construction of table that is especially suitable for use in hotels 'and which can not only be capable of use as a dining-table, but can be readily converted into a writing-table.

A table according to the invention is illustrated inthe accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation, partly in section, of the table when closed for use as a dining-table. Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively end and side elevations, each partly in section, showing the table opened out to serve as a writing-table.

On the framing r, which is provided with feet f and may have covering-pieces n n2, as shown in Fig. 2, there is mounted a tabletop or plate consisting of two parts p and p2, and above this is a second table-top formed of two flaps t and t2, hinged at S to the parts 3o p and p2, respectively. The part p is rigidly fixed to the framing r, while the part p2 can be moved putWardly, fillets Z, that engage in grooves 'n at each end-of the framing, affording the necessary support. The extent of the outward movement of the part p2 is such as to permit of the iiaps t and t2 being opened out into the vertical position shown in Fig. 2. The table-top p' p2 is made shorter than the other #t2 by about twice the thickness of the latter, in order that the two liaps t and t2 shall be supported when in their vertical positions by the framing r. The vacant space left between the two parts p' p2 of the tabletop at each end is covered over or concealed by a small flap d, hinged to the frame 1' at t'. The parts p' and p2 are each provided with a writing-pad b, with a pull-out slide 0L for supporting a drinking-glass or other article, as also with apertures for penholders and an ink-pot.q The flaps t and zare each provided on their lower surface with a frame 0, in which are fitted shelves g g', iXed by means of hinges o', so that when they are closed (in which position they are held by ball bolts or catches k, one of which is let into the side fillets of the frame 0 at each end) they will be flush with the lower edge of the frame 0 and with the general under surface of the flaps.

At the upper edge of each frame o there is provided a recess c, in which can be inserted a clip m, whereby the iaps t and t2 are pressed close against each other and are prevented from falling into the horizontal position. The clip m may serve to support a lamp q, Candlestick, or other article. The flaps t' and t2 may further be each provided with a recess for the attachment of a tearoff calendar.

Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of the said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, we declare that what we claim is-` In a table capable of being converted into a writing-desk, the combination of a divided top, comprising a fixed part and a movable part, with a plate superposed on said top and consisting of two connected naps, and turndown shelves fit-ted to the under face of the said flaps, the said shelves being adapted to hold writing utensils and to be moved into and retained in a vertical position substantially as set forth.
