DEVICE FOR SUPPORTING BATHERS IN BATH-TUBS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,327, dated March 9, 1897.
Application filed August 1, 1896.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARL GEORG FRIED- LAENDER, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Hamburg, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Device to be Placed in a Bath for Supporting the Bather, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved device designed to be placed or suspended within a bath for supporting the bather, especiallyif an invalid or an infant, in a suitable convenient position.
The object of my improved device is to secure a proper and, in case of accident, such as fainting, a fit, or the like, a safe position for the bat-her and to facilitate the bathing and washing of infants, in that the attendant may have both the hands free for the work.
In order that my invention may be fully understood and readily carried into effect, I will proceed to describe the same more in detail by the aid of the drawings hereunto annexed.
Figure 1 is a plan of a bathing-tub having my improved supporting device attached ,or applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the bathing-tub and the supporting device according to line 1 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the supporting device removed out of the bathing-tub.

' With reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings,
the improved supporter consists of a preferably U-shaped tray a, which may be lined with a suitable soft material or fabric. The side edges of the said tray are bent down so as to form hooks a, by the aid of which the tray a, when inserted into the bathing-tub B, is suspended to the rim or edge I) of the latter in such a manner that a slightly-inclined bed is formed within the bath, upon which the head and the shoulders of the person or infant to be bathed may rest. In some cases there may be attached to the said tray a or Serial No. 601,334. (no model.)
formed with it in one piece, as shown in the figures, a curved spring-plate c or the like, which, resting with its free end upon the bottom of the bathing-tub, forms a yielding support or bearing for the tray a.
In order to prevent the bather or infant from slipping or sliding down from the slightly-inclined tray a, the latter is provided with two suitable, quilted or stuffed, horns d d, arranged and formed so as to grip under the shoulders, forming thereby a reliable stop or bearing for the same.
When the tray is made of sheet metal, the arms or horns d may be produced by cutting out small tongues and bending them up in suitable curves, as shown in the drawings.
Having fully described my invention, what I desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent is- 1. An attachment for bath-tubs consisting of an inclined rest provided with hooks for hooking the same to the sides of the bath-tub, and with horns d, for the purpose set forth.
2. An attachment for bath-tubs consisting of an inclined seat provided with hooks for hooking the same to the sides of the bath-tub and with a recurved spring extension having bearing on the bottom of the tub, for the purpose set forth.
3. An attachment for bath-tubs consisting of an inclined rest having its sides bent to form hooks adapted to engage the sides of the bath-tub, and provided with horns d, and with a recurved spring extension 0 adapted 'to rest on the bottom of said tub, the said attachment formed of a single piece of sheet metal, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
