- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED W. WENTW'ORTH, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
PARCEL-CARRIER FOR BlCY CLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,128, dated March 2, 1897.
Application filed May 2 8, 1 8 9 6- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED 'W. WENTWORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing in Paterson, county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Parcel-Carriers for Bicycles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The obj eat of this invention is to provide a detachable parcel-carrier for bicycles and the like of simple, strong, and durable construction, light in weight, and easily handled.
The invention consists in the improved parcel-carrier and in the combination and ar-' rangement of the various parts thereof, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully. described.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the head and handle-bar of a bicycle, illustrating my improved parcel-carrier in position on the said handle-bar; Fig. 2, anenlarged side elevation of the carrier detached; Fig. 3, a top plan view of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a sectional detail view of the carrier-joint.
In said drawings, a represents the handlebar, on each side of the center of which and projecting forward therefrom is arranged a caliper-shaped clamp or holder 0, secured to said handle-bar by means of the clip I). Said clamps or holders 0 are adapted to receive the parcel d, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1.
The clip I) is preferably made in two sections 0 and e, hinged together, as at o and provided with projecting flanges 6 adapted to be secured together by means of the bolt (2 and to thus clamp the sections 6 and e to the handle-bar, as will be manifest. Integral with the upper section e or secured thereto is the block f, provided with the caliper-shaped arm f, having a strengthening -rib f arranged on its under side. To the side or plate g, projecting upward from said block, is pivotally secured, as at g, a second calipershaped arm 9 arranged symmetrically with the arm f and provided on its upper side with a strengthening-rib 9 The arm 9 is pro- Serial No. 593,392. (No model.)
vided at its pivoted end with fiat surfaces h and 7?, arranged substantially at right angles to each other and adapted to be engaged by the angular flat spring h, secured within the block f and prevented from being dislocated by means of the pin 9 and the projection 9 as clearly shown in the drawings.
A plate g is preferably arranged on the open side of the block f, keeping the pivoted arm g and its controlling-spring in proper position and concealing the same.
The clamps or holders 0 are secured to the handle-bar a by means of the clips I), as heretofore described. The lower caliper-shaped arms f will thus be stationary, while the upper ones are capable of being swung upward and backward, on their respective fulcrums and are held in their opened position by means of the springs h engaging their fiat surfaces 71 After the parcel, coat, or bundle has been placed on the stationary arms f the pivoted arms g are pressed forward and downward and by action of the springs h clamp against or onto the parcel, as will be manifest.
I do not intend to limit myself to the precise construction shown and described, as various alterations can be made without changing the scope of my invention; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A luggage-carrier for bicycles consisting of a block, a caliper-shaped grip and clamp carried thereby, the members f and e of the grip and the clamp respectively being integral with the block and having their concave sides disposed in opposite directions, and the members g and e of the grip and the clamp respectively being pivotally connected to the block, the pivoted end of the member 9 being provided with flat faces arranged substantially at right angles to each other, and a spring arranged in said block between the members 6 and g of the clamp and the grip respectively, said spring being adapted to come into contact with the faces of the member g and to retain said member in an open or closed position, substantially as described.
In testimony that I-claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of May, 1896.
FRED WV. WENTWORTH.
