Be it known that I', OTIS F. PACKARD, of Toledo, county of Lucas, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Cane and Torch; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and to use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form. part of this specification.

My invention relates to a combined cane and torch, having for its object to provide a device of this character which shall be of neat appearance, inexpensive of construction, light in weight, and quickly and easily arranged either as a cane or torch.

The invention consists in a body in the form of the stick of a cane, which is hollow, thereby forming an oil-chamber, the upper end of the body being provided with a wickholder removably secured thereto, with a handle so constructed as to be secured to either end of the body at the top to act as a cane-handle and to cover the wick and wickholder, and when secured at the lower end of the body to act as a handle for the torch.

The invention further consists in the parts as shown, described, and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a device arranged as a cane. Fig. 2 is a like View of the device when arranged as a torch. Fig. 3 is an enlarged view in vertical section.

1 designates the body of the device, which is in the form of the body of a cane and hollow in cross-section, thereby providing a chamber 2.

be of any desired construction and be provided with any desired means for raising or lowering the wick 6, which is carried thereby, or, if desired, there may be no wick-adj usting device, but the same may be raised manually.

7 designates the handle, which is provided at its upper end with any desired form of knob 8. The handle 7 is screw-threaded internally at its lower end, as at 9, and at its upper end, as at 10. Projecting below the bottom 3 is an annular projection 11, which is screw-threaded externally.

lVhen the device is to be used as a cane, the handle 7 is arranged upon the upper end of the body, as shown in Fig. 1, and is secured thereto by turning the same, the screw threads 9 engaging with the external threads upon the annular projection at. The wickholder is enveloped by the handle. Therefore the device, when used as a cane, presents a neat appearance. When used as a torch, the handle is removed from the upper end by unscrewing the same from the body and is telescoped over the lower end, being secured thereto by revolving the same, the internal threads 10 in the handle registering and engaging with the external threads upon the annular projection 11 upon the base of the body.

To fill the body with oil, the wick-holder is unscrewed and slightly raised, when the oil may be poured into the body through the orifice in the top thereof.

It will thus be seen that I have provided a combined cane and torch which may be used for political campaign purposes, whichis neat in appearance, light and inexpensive of construction, and that can readily be changed from a cane to a torch, or vice versa.

\Vhat I claim is 1. In a combined cane and torch, a hollow body, a wick-holder carried thereby, and a handle removably secured to either end of the body, at the top to act as a cane-handle and to envelop the wick and the wick-holder, and at the bottom to act as a torch-handle.
