ALCOHOL-LAMP.
Specification of Letters ratent.
Patented Dec. 15, 1914.
Application filed. March 21, 1914. Serial No. 826,328.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, ELMER I-I. IVLATKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bonne Terre, in the county of St. Francois and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Alcohol-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
The invention provides a lamp of novel structure designed chiefly for burning alcohol and like volatile liquid fuel, the novelty residing chiefly in a hollow handle which is utilized as means for filling the lamp and as a support for a bracket which is adapted to receive the article to be heated.
The invention consists of the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated and claimed.
In the drawings hereto attached :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lamp embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the Wick tube and adjusting collar.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indicated in all the views of the drawing, by the same reference characters.
The lamp body 1 may be of any construction and formation and as shown is made tapering and preferably formed of metal terminating in a threaded neck 2 to which the wick tube 3 is secured by means of a screw collar 4. An adjusting collar 5 is fittedto the wick tube 3 and may be moved up or down to expose more or less of the wick, according to the size of flame desired. A cap 6 is adapted to be .fitted over the wick tube and screw collar 1 and is provided with a tubular extension 7 which when uncovered provides an escape for air when filling the lamp. A cap 8 is adapted to close the tubular extension 7 to prevent loss of fuel by evaporation. A tube 9 is located at the side of the lamp body 1 and is connected at its lower end with such lamp body. Thetube 9 extends some distance above the lamp and is utilized as means for filling the lamp, as a handle and as a support for a bracket 10 which is adapted to receive articles to be heated. The upper end of the tube 9 is threaded and receives a cap 11. A shoulder nects the upper portion of the lamp body 1 withthe tube 9 and serves to strengthen the latter.
When filling the lamp the cap 8 is removed to provide an escape for the air when pouring the alcohol or other fuel into the lampthrough the tube 9. After the lamp has 'been filled the cap 11 previously removed is placed in position, thereby closing the upper end of the tube 9. When the lamp is lighted the cap 8 is removed, it being understood that the size of the flame is regulated by setting the adjusting collar 5 up or down. When the lamp is not in use the caps 6 and 8 are placed in position.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I- have described the principle of operation of the invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodimentthereof, I desire to have it understood that.
the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described the invention,what
is claimed as new is 1. In combination with a lamp body, a tube at one side thereof and in communication at its lowerv end with such lamp body,
said tube extending some distance above the lamp and a bracket mounted upon the upper portion of the tube and adapted to be turned so as to be out of the way of the flame. or to support an article above the flame.
2. In combination with a lamp body, a tube at one side thereof and inhcommunication at its lower end therewith, said tube projecting some distance above the lamp body and haiving a shouldernear its upper In testimony whereof I affix my signature end and having such upper end threaded in presence of two Witnesses.
to receive a cap, a bracket mounted upon the ELMER H MATKIN upper portion of the tube and a cap thread- 1 ed upon the upper end of the tube and -Witn'esses: adapted to clamp the bracket upon the said C. M. SWAN, shoulder. 'N. L. COLE.
