Be it known that I, ALBERT M. BARoUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milton, in the county of Oabell and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cattle-Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in cattle-guards or automatically-operating gates, the object of the same being to provide a gate at railroad-crossings and mechanism whereby said gates are closed by the approach of cattle thereto.

The invention consists of two pairs of gates on opposite sides of the railroad-track and normally held open by springs or weights and a platform for each pair of gates connected to a rock-shaft, the crank-arms of which are attached to reciprocating rods having pitmen connected thereto and to bars on said gates.

The invention also consists in other details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a plan view of my device in open position. Fig. 2 represents a similar view of the same with one pair of the gates closed. Fig. 3 is a section through the platforms through which said gates are operated. Fig. 4. is a side elevation of the gates. Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the same in open position. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section on the line 00 w of Fig. 1.

Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the difierent views.

On each side of the railroad-track 1, suitably secured to the ties 2, are posts 3 4: 5, connected by bars 6 6 and otherwise suitably braced and supported. Pivotally connected to the inside of each of the central posts 4 are gates 7 7 and 8 8, arranged in pairs, the gates 7 7 being adapted to be operated at the same time in one direction and the gates 8 8 at the same time in the opposite direction. Each of the gates 7 is connected through a pitman 9 with a reciprocating rod 10, Whose outer end has connected to it a cord 11, passing over a pulley 12, mounted in the post 3 and provided with a weight 13 upon its lower end. The opposite end of each of the reciprocating rods is connected to a crank-arm 14. upon the outer end of a rock-shaft 15, mounted in suitable guides or bearings 16 on one of the ties 2, and having connected to it a platform 17, made in two

parts

18 and 19, pivoted together, as shown, and the part 19 provided with projecting arms 20 20,'which engage the under side of the part 18. By this construction it will be seen that the depression of the platform 17, caused by the weight of the cattle thereon, will rotate the rockshaft 15 and Withdraw the crank-arms 1i thereon, forcing back the reciprocating rod 10 and closing the gate by means of the pitman 9, connected thereto. As soon as the pressure is relieved from the platform 17 the rod 10 is drawn back to its normal position, opening the gates 7, by the action of the weight 13 on the cord 11. I may employ instead of the weight 13 springs for normally urging the rod 10 outward.

I have described the gates 7 and the mechanism by which the same are operated. Exactly the same mechanism inreversed position is connected with the gates 8 for closing them upon the approach of cattle or other animals in the opposite direction.

Having now described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is

1. The combination with apair of gates pivotally mounted upon suitable uprights, of a reciprocating rod for each gate normally held in outward position, a pitman connecting said rod and said gate, a rock-shaft connected to said reciprocating rod and means, operated by the approach of cattle or other animals to the gates, for rotating said rock-shaft and closing said gates, substantially as and for the purpose described.

2. The combination withapair of gates pivotally mounted on suitable uprights or supports, of a reciprocating rod for each of said gates, a cord connected to the outer end of said rod passing over a suitable guide-pulley,
